Evangelicals Give Big South Carolina Kiss To Donald Trump

For months and months, Donald Trump has been exclaiming, “The evangelicals love me and I love them.” Well folks, tonight that love affair paved his way to victory in the all-important South Carolina Primary.  72% of the voters in South Carolina Saturday night with evangelical. Trump won 33 percent, of them. Ted Cruz won 27 percent, and Rubio won 22 percent. So let’s not kid ourselves here: Donald Trump is on his way to the GOP nomination and if he wins it, it will be because of evangelicals. Plain and simple.

Let’s have this thought sink in for a moment. Donald Trump won the evangelical vote in South Carolina. Let me repeat that. Donald Trump won the evangelical vote in South Carolina. Ted Cruz, the evangelical candidate did not. Marco Rubio, who speaks so eloquently about God didn’t either. Both those men (Rubio and Cruz) are solid men who love Jesus. But it is Trump who has done the best job of channeling the anger of the GOP electorate and guess what? Evangelicals are upset with the Republican Party too. They’ve felt like cheap political pawns for years, constantly being used by the GOP to get out and vote and then having nothing to show for it. With Trump, many of those evangelicals feel like they’ve found the politically incorrect mouthpiece to channel their inner frustration. Is he the most righteous man to carry the torch? No. Is he the most transparent and authentic one? Clearly, they believe so. Look, evangelicals are not monolithic. There are plenty of evangelicals who can’t stand Trump. But as we saw in South Carolina tonight, there are plenty who trust him to get America back on the right track.  So now it’s on to Nevada where Trump holds a massive lead. Then come the SEC Primaries where Trump is once again poised to do very well. Let’s have some truth telling here: if this was anybody other than Donald Trump, we’d say this nomination process is virtually over. But because it’s Trump and he’s such a wild card, we can’t say that. If Trump is going to lose this nomination, he’ll have to beat himself. He’ll have to be SO over the top that it becomes too much to handle. I’m not convinced that’s going to happen. He has a Teflon quality that is remarkable to watch.

Now, as for Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, this is going to be interesting. Let’s start with Cruz.

You’ve got to feel for the guy. He’s got a stellar record of defending Judeo-Christian principles; he’s a born-again believer; he has plenty of money; he’s thrown the liberal policy kitchen sink at Trump and he’s as smart as they come. Then along comes South Carolina with a treasure trove of evangelical voters. You would think this state is picture perfect for him yet Trump beats him among evangelical voters (33 to 27%). That simply can’t happen and for that reason alone it just wasn’t a good night for Cruz. What I’m picking up from evangelical voters who are on the fence is that some just either don’t trust him based on what happened in Iowa (and also what Trump and Rubio have been saying about his character) and they don’t necessarily like the way he comes across. They feel he’s a bit too slick and too cute by half. Those are the perceptions out there in evangelical world and it hurt him in South Carolina. There’s also another factor. Cruz is trying to channel that outsider, anti-Washington DC space that Trump occupies too but it plays better with Trump because he is indeed an outsider that talks like one. Cruz is a U.S. Senator that does not talk like an outsider. He talks like a polished politician. The two don’t go together and I think it hurts him stylistically. As for where he goes from here, I will tell you this: Cruz is a fighter and so is his campaign. They have a great campaign operation and they’ll figure a way (on paper at least) to plot strategy and come back. Then they have to hope that their paper strategy comes to fruition by the time those crucial SEC Primaries take place a week from Tuesday.

For Marco Rubio, this was a great night. First of all, instead of fighting Jeb Bush for third place, he was fighting Ted Cruz for a virtual tie for second. That’s a win any way you cut it. But it gets better. Jeb Bush is now out of the race. That should translate into more support for Rubio. Plus, expect to see an onslaught of GOP politicians starting to endorse Rubio this week. I’m waiting for Mitt Romney to endorse him anytime now. This is all bad news for Ted Cruz because when this happens the media will begin to craft the storyline that Rubio is going to try to be the giant slayer against Trump. Cruz wants that title so he’ll need to fight off that narrative while at the same time fight off a media generated narrative that if he can’t win evangelicals in South Carolina, how in the world will he do any better in the SEC Primaries? So the bottom line here is that Rubio has a huge upside now with momentum in his favor. Rubio’s problem is that he needs that one-on-one matchup with Trump quickly but Cruz is in the way. Conversely, Cruz really needs Rubio out of the way so he can go after Trump. Neither one is going to happen in the short term and you know what that means right? It means Trump continues to move forward because the mathematical pie will work in his favor.  It just keeps breaking Trump’s way.

The only reason Trump won is because the vote is split. If it was a two man race with any other candidate, he would have lost.

I can't believe Christians have been so duped by this charlatan. He has supported partial birth abortion, thinks he doesn't have a need to ask for forgiveness for anything because he is too great for that. He has helped to elect numerous politicians who have done everything they can to tear down the Christian beliefs of this Country. He has business partners who have been charged and or convicted of having ties to organized crime. He has made a lot of his money by owning and running gambling establishments. He has not been faithful to his wives. He made the statement on a TV interview when asked what he and his daughter have most in common his answer was "Sex" Now what kind of normal supposed Christian father would make that answer to that question? I'm sorry but having been raised a Christian all my life the support I see for Trump in the Christian community makes me question their faithfulness to their walk with God!

This only confirms my belief that the religious right was really about politics. Trump's "Two Corinthians", obvious ignorance of religion, cursing, nasty attacks and personal insults should disqualify him from ANY support.

But for evangelicals to embrace such behavior negates any message they might want to send about civility, tradition and morality. To say that this is embarrassing is an understatement.

Pride goes before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. (Proverbs 16:18 )

The last great sin of a nation before God's judgment falls. Instead of humbling themselves and seeking help from God they turn to a man, just as Israel turned to Saul. A man, they know in their heart, is not a Christian but of a haughty spirit, never apologizing for anything and heaping scorn on those that oppose him.

Yes, he will take up for Christians, at least for his first day in office.

Evangelicals find themselves in an extremely pathetic place in 2016. Supporting and voting for a man who is neither Christian nor Conservative and completely ignoring two viable christian and conservative candidates in front of their noses.

It recalls the time when Israel wanted their king desperately and God gave it to them, with disastrous results.

Evangelicalism is in disarray and it's probably due to their lack of seriousness in values and proably way too much television.

How pathetic. God help us.

Following Jesus is not all about holding up a Bible and proclaiming His name. Remember Jesus' followers had a hard time understanding why He associated with Zacchaeus for example. Jesus had to teach about the good samaritan for his followers to understand good deeds from anyone are worthy, not only the descendants of Abraham. When Pilate asked Jesus "who are you?" He responed "I am the truth, where the truth is I am present". We need a president speaks the truth and defends his people courageously without fear of media criticism. Nobody was talking about enforcing our immigration laws until Trump, they all fear controversy. He has been in the public since the 70s, and yes he is a sinner. But it seems the last 5-10 years he has been a good father and husband.

Drs. say I have an uncanny ability to recognize patterns & solve puzzles. I had an ueasy feeling in my gut & heart when I first saw & heard Mr. Cruz speak. I caucused in Iowa this time. I saw & heard things that made me upset & saw that our leader that night had heard something, too. But he stressed vote for *ANY* candidate as if to counter what some may have heard. There's more...even other Senators say he's for Ted and will throw you under the bus to get there. Not very Christian... one of is workers is speaking out now about lies.
Mr. Rubio-there are things he's done that are just plain not nice. Deliberately excluding some people, and lying to get his bill passed.
Mr Trump did't escape paying debt-he used chapter 11. I'm divorced, but it was friendly, she just realized something was missing. I married again.

Who here has not changed in the last few years? Who has not grown wiser, learned new things, and decided their old ways weren't as good as they could have been? Who has never had a life changing experience that caused them to be different?
Who here has never said anything that they regretted 10 years later even 10 days later?
Who are we to judge why a person does or says what they do? Did you know I am blunt, very "un-PC" and sometimes have extreme trouble with tact? I speak then think, I say what pops into my head, it can take me time to answer questions so I hate meetings and prefer email. Sound familiar? It's called ADHD. My gosh the people on these boards act as though Trump is the worst person there is. He is the only the one that came out and said we have to secure our borders a country without borders is no country at all. As he has stated many times this would not be talked about even now if it were not for him. Trump is the only one with the will to build a wall around this nation. If in his 4 years as president he accomplished the wall he would be a great success because no one running has the will to do it. Trump is 100 times better than the other side and as far as other candidates like Rubio...what kind of person goes to Catholic mass on Saturday then Southern Baptist on Sunday. To me that is hypocritical strictly playing for votes. Quit being so self righteous, the same people pointing a finger at Trump is the same people that watch Rated R movies. Quit being the hypocrite. Let e first state that I believe there is something out there much bigger than I am. I am not sure what it is do I call it God.

With that said:

My biggest concern is our open borders and all of the illegals that the Establishment Republicans are supporting will not only destroy America but our Christian values. Once Islam gets a very small foothold in a country it is only a matter of time.

Both Rubio and Cruz seems to support the Establishment's position on immigration so I can not support them. I would be supporting the end of Christianity in America for reasons stated above.

It is the long term game that we have to keep our eye on. Short term holds no hope.

Why no mention of Ted Cruz trying to form the North American Union which would of did away with the Constitution or that his wife is on the counsel of foreign relations and works for Goldman sacks.
He vetted John Roberts for G.W.Bush for the supreme court.
Which cast the deciding vote that gave us Obamacare as a tax and the deciding vote on gay marriage.

Why nothing about Rubio ties to the mafia in Florida. Or that he attended gay bath parties.

Maybe our country needs to be humbled before we can truly return to our founding principals. Basically what's happened is that we've sent good men and women into this totally corrupt environment where they become become basically neutralized. If that happens in a factory the higher ups send in a hatchet man as a last resort. He's no one's friend (except of course to the stockholders) and sets to work doing his job, clearing out the corrupting influences. He's not a nice guy. He's actually quite horrifyingly awful to those who are comfortably abusing the power and money provided to them to bring organization and profit to the company. He's the type of guy you don't want to have to go to the woodshed with. I've had bosses like that. They're no fun if you're slacking but they will bring out the best in you - or fire you. I think the head of every ABC agency that's gone rogue needs that special time with Trump. Anyway my two cents which is worth at least half of that.

# RE: Evangelicals Give Big South Carolina Kiss To Donald Trump

It goes way deeper that this. A lot of us Christians have been looking for a 'political solution' to a 'spiritual problem'.

We've elected all kinds of 'republican' candidates over the past ten years, expecting them to 'fix' everything...only to have them betray us over and over again. It isn't about getting the right person in office, God can do that himself without our help. The problem is that we've been putting more faith in some particular candidate to save us, rather than placing our faith where it belongs, regardless of who is in office. God sets up kings and raises up nations, and he takes them down at his discretion.

I see this whole Trump thing as the right-wing version of Obamamania. I like some of the things he is saying. I'm sure he probably loves America and wants to help make things better. I would probably vote for him if it comes to it. But I think we need to keep realistic expectations, from both sides of this debate on Trump.

We forget Trump grew up an Evangelical, he attended one of the most acclaimed Pastor's church in the country and that influence even if Trump does't realize it continues.

I challenge any of you to go to Youtube and search Normal Vincent Peale and listen to any video you find and then do it again and then tell me your Spirit and Faith is not both challenged and encouraged to be a better and certainly more positive person.

When Trump just says trust me or that he will do something, he believes it and it is that Faith planted in his Spirit by all those years of great Biblical teachings by Dr.Peale.

I have no doubt Holy Spirit is connecting Trump's Faith with those open to receive it. Apparently a large part of the Faithful are connecting!

I think a lot of the "evangelical" vote would better be described as protestant vote, specifically anti-pope vote, obviously because of the exchanged diatribes the past week between the Pontiff and Mr. Trump. My evaluation of that issue at the time was, an still is: "Well he just gave Trump the nomination". We shall see. It depends on just who wants to take on Mr. Trump in the coming weeks. If the GOP machine tries to take him on, they too will lose, the party will lose and the nation will then have Miz Clinton. Who is the choice? Clinton, or Trump? The GOP better get smart and hold their collective tongues, unlike the Pontiff. How many more times can they be wrong in their analogies? They sure guessed wrong on Mr. Bush. Rubio and Cruz may more quote more Scripture than Trump. But, Trump lives more Scripture when it comes to God's order for how a nation should be strong. And, for those who see Trump's words as being unrighteous? They should take a course on what kind of language the Holy Spirit filled the mouths of the prophets when confronting corruption in the leaders and people. It would shock certain self righteous types who think being righteous means 'goody-two-shoes' talk. The self righteous types would be stunned to lean what Paul was speaking about when he spoke about no "foolish jesting." The context contains vulgarities of the day in the Koine Greek. It was hitting them between the eyes. Let alone, what Isaiah spoke about in his "filthy rags" passage. It meant used menstrual rags. That was to show the intensity of God's disgust towards the dead works of the self righteous, self-congratulating, religious types in their attempt to please God.

Why would he allow the breaking of the laws of the State of Iowa by publishing a form illegally? Why would he allow anyone on his team including himself to give some kind of an idea that he is God's personal choice to save this country? NO man who loves Jesus Christ would engage in such a frivolous and evil approach - he lost any testimony he had in my opinion! Also, Rubio say's he loves Jesus! Really? How can you love Jesus and not obey him? Rubio lied also about amnesty and some other items. Also, he worships Mary a sinner and not holy! One whoh needed salvation like any other sinner and yet he worships her and prays to her and Jesus said ONLY HE was the way, the truth and the life. No man cometh unto the Father except by ME! Half of the so-called "evangelicals", including Mr. Robertson himself are a bunch of legalistic, tithe-bragging, holier-than-thou phonies. This is attested to in the number of these people supporting the likes of trump. I was raised Roman Catholic and now consider myself an evangelical myself [who attends an inter-denominational church] but Matthew warns in Mat 24:24, "...they shall deceive the very elect." "They", I'm sure, includes the likes of trump, MANY religious "leaders" and other false prophets of today. We, as a BODY, need to read the Bible and understand its full context, otherwise, we'll become part and parcel to what is said in Hosea 4:6, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge..."

I think Ted Cruz killed his chances by campaigning with and closely associating with Glenn Beck.

Beck is an unsavory character with a history of alcoholism, drug addiction and membership in the Mormon cult. Beck has used his media business to tell horrible lies about the other candidates and he has encouraged Ted Cruz to do the same.

I'm happy that Ted Cruz self-destructed in South Carolina. He pulled a dirty trick on a good man, Ben Carson, in Iowa and his push polling of lies about Mr. Trump are disgusting.

Cruz says he is hated because he is "too conservative", but he is unpopular in the Senate because he is an irritating, smarmy liar who is also a Mormon cult member,

Cruz is finished. He will not be President, V-president, or Supreme Court justice because Trump will remember. He owes it all to Glenn Beck, who is also nuts.

It would seem that many of us are wondering about the percentage of evangelical votes which Mr. Trump is receiving. But I want to keep in mind that 33% is not all evangelicals, and notice that is also the same percentage of the overall vote which he received. So Trump would have received the same percentage of the vote if all of the evangelicals had stayed home. The vast majority of evangelicals in South Carolina did not vote for Trump. Therefore, I think it's a questionable conclusion to state that, if/when Trump wins the nomination, it will be "because of evangelicals", as the author of this article says.
