Ted Cruz, Rand Paul and Praying for Spiritual Revival In America

It was a sight to behold inside a conference ballroom at the downtown Marriott hotel in Des Moines, Iowa, as hundreds of Iowa pastors called out to God and prayed over two U.S. senators, both of whom seem interested in running for president of the United States.

Sen. Ted Cruz and Sen. Rand Paul came to Iowa Friday to speak at this Pastors and Pews event, organized by influential evangelical political operative David Lane. The Brody File got an up close look and access to the private event. We will be posting compelling video early next week. For now, we are releasing a few pictures from the event.

Ted Cruz, who received a warm greeting, spoke for about 30 minutes and then took questions from the audience. He outlined how he championed religious freedom cases ranging from the Ten Commandments to the Mojave Cross case. He touched on how to go about eliminating Obamacare; he called for abolishing the IRS (which received a standing ovation), and on the issue of marriage he said, “There’s no issue where we need to be more on our knees…we are facing an assault on marriage.”

On spiritual matters, he told the pastors that, “We are in a battle to turn this country around.” Later, in a one-on-one sit-down interview with The Brody File, he said this country is badly in need of spiritual revival (More on those comments coming Monday). He charged the pastors to step up and speak boldly about the issues facing our country today. He compared all of them to Esther, saying the biblical woman was put in a position of leadership, “for such a time as this.”

Afterwards, pastors gathered around Cruz and his father (who was on hand for the conference) to pray for them (More on this next week as well).

As for Rand Paul, he spoke for about 20 minutes and then the pastors prayed for the senator and his wife Kelly. Paul spent the bulk of his time explain how liberty, freedom, and virtue go hand in hand. His biggest applause lines came when he talked about his dedication to the pro-life issue and how he believes America needs to cut off aid to countries that hate America.

He briefly addressed his foreign policy views, explaining that we should be focused on peace not war. He invoked the name of Jesus saying how He says in the Bible, “Blessed are the peacemakers.” However, he made clear that he was not against war and if war was necessary, he would make sure America would win it decisively (More from my one-on-one sit-down interview with Rand Paul coming on Monday as well)

There’s no doubt Paul and Cruz have begun thinking about running for president in 2016 and this event was a chance to introduce themselves to a pivotal group of pastors who will play a significant role in the presidential selection process since Iowa is always the first state in the nation to vote. However, the main goal of the two-day conference was to really motivate pastors to speak boldly about issues from the pulpit and to awake Christian voters, who may agree that America’s culture is going in the toilet, but sit on their hands and do nothing about it.

While getting more evangelicals to the polls is a political goal of the conference, there is a much deeper spiritual purpose. These pastors want to see spiritual revival in America. Speaker after speaker implored them to simply preach the word from the Bible and leave the outcome to God. A big theme was praying for another Great Awakening in this country but the pastors here agreed that it could only come if evangelicals truly repent and get down on their knees in prayer. In other words, there won’t be any Great Awakening if Christians don’t get serious in their prayer life.

Other highlights of the conference: RNC Chairman Reince Priebus was on hand. The pastors prayed for him as well (Picture below). On Monday, we’ll have more on the back-story as to why Chairman Priebus was there in the first place.

Another side note: After the conference, we met up with Ted Cruz’s father at a Perkins restaurant in Des Moines! (Picture below) The exclusive interview comes Monday. Wait until you hear what he has to say about his son. You won’t want to miss it.

It’s all part of The Brody File’s trip to Iowa. Follow us on Twitter, where our producer, Shosannah Nunez has dubbed our trip to Iowa, #brodtrip.

The Brody File: Don’t mess with us. We’re everywhere. We’re the exclusive place for the intersection of faith and politics. Remember our motto: We’re a combination of Meet the Press, a dash of Comedy Central and a sprinkling of Jesus!

See you Monday and all next week with lots more video and analysis.

The biblical admonishment for this is found in Matthew 6.

"Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven...

“When you pray, you are not to be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and on the street corners so that they may be seen by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you."

"And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him."

“Pray, then, in this way:

‘Our Father who is in heaven,..."

1st Am: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;..

Mr Cruz, you are a hero to me. If we had more Republicans like you, there may be a chance to push back against this onslaught against our Constitution. Sadly, I believe it is too late for this country.

I’m surprised the use of the IRS as a weapon against conservatives has not caused a bigger outcry. Wake up America! When the government targets and then persecutes its citizens, the Constitution may as well not exist. It’s time to start again with a brand new country. Let’s create that place.

Now that's an encouraging sight! I think it's indicative that these two Congressmen are also the only two who appear to be true bona-fide representatives of the People and the Constitution. The very first Congressional meeting opened with a prayer... a prayer specifically to Jesus, to guide a group of modest Congressmen, and it was not to some generic all-inclusive PC "god". Unfortunately, this practice of a direct prayer specifically to Jesus has become just a watered-down formality over the past 200+ years. I can't help but wonder what alternative condition our nation would be in if all or most of Congress (and President) had continued a valid appeal to Jesus Christ to guide them.

These Pastors,as well as some others, NEED to be motivated. Some of them need to be corrected. The Evangelical community is almost directly responsible for our current occupier of the POTUS office's reelection. A significant number of them sat on their brains and refused to vote for Romney because he's a Mormon. Surely no one can think that's worse than a Muslim, or at best a Muslim sympathizer. I have never before been so disappointed in my Christian brothers as I am for that failure.

There will be no revival. We're on the edge of the Great Tribulation. The Federal Reserve is creating $80 billion a month out of thin air. It's only a matter of time before we have hyperinflation like Germany had in the 1920s. If we aren't raptured first we'll see God give America the punishment she deserves.

We as children of God have sat back for too long and allowed sin to spread like a cancer throughout our society, to the point that it has reached the very upper echelons of leadership in our country. We do indeed need a national, if not global spiritual and cultural revival and it starts with each of us. I write about this in Artifice: Humanities Deception from Time Immemorial and should be a text book in our schools. Keep praying and keep the faith, a time is coming when every knee will confess and bow to our Lord and Messiah. www.aijacob.com

Paul/Cruz 2016...the only "real" conservatives out there. They need to unify early on...agree on the ticket...and go after Old Hag Hillary early, often, and hard with a unified front. I put Paul at the top of the ticket because he's 8 years older than Cruz...if each could get 2 terms in office, we MIGHT be able to reverse the damage of 8 years of Obama...and 8 years of Bush for that matter.

@ anonfreepress now...apply that scripture, to the photos of Obama praying in church that were obviously staged, or, to the same pictures of pastors praying over the President. if you're going to apply scriptures as an admonishment, you must apply them to all.

I am "proud" of these men for taking this first step.

BUT, to answer some of these other posts and to agree with Bill, I remind us of Who it is that places "kings" in their place.

I only study ancient commentaries and they understood this principle.

Obama is God's man. I believe God put him there because we as a nation have turned our back on Him. THEREFORE, BO is there as a sign of Judgment!

Our pastor has said for about 10 years that 55 million murders will NOT go unpunished!

A best friend has said almost 8 years that we have fallen below the "proverbial;" "what if there are only 10?"

I post this on many sites, The Authority on Everything said; "a house divided against itself CANNOT stand."

It CANNOT stand. And, this nation is almost equally divided between the FOOLish, vulgar, and UnGodly and the rest of US!

The USA CANNOT stand as God has turned His back on US.

The reality in American Demographic politics (as Demographics relate to ideology) is that Evangelicals are declining in numbers, and fast - while minority voters increase - equally fast.

I understand these politicians, especially Cruz, strengthening their base, but activity like this won't help in a general election, only in the Primary process. America's youth votes overwhelmingly in favor of moderate to liberal social policies, and will continue to vote against those that take the hard religious line. This group counter-balances, and makes moot point of, the Evangelical community voting in high numbers for any particular candidate.

As far as "protecting marriage" being the issue that we need to "most be on our knees" to protect - that is just hilariously bad word choice.

We should also remember this from the word of God.

Dan 4:17 This matter [is] by the decree of the watchers, and the demand by the word of the holy ones: to the intent that the living may know that the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men.

I wouldn't go as far as to say Cruz and the others were the basest of men, would you?

I am surprised of the ignorance of "smart" men. Your fighting against Cesar as if you had a stake in his domain. "Render to Cesar..." The Messiah was born in year 4002 during the Hellenization of Judea. His name is Yeshua meaning salvation. You obey man's laws but say that YHVH's are done away with through the death of His son. Using stop signs are effectiive to preserve life. The reality is so elevated that deception comes easy to you. You are waiting for an "event" and when it appears you will fall easily. "The delusion will be so great that even it could...." "There appears a way that seems right..." And the Council of Nicea has the populace completely blind leaving out so many other texts. In the Gospel of John, the very last verse in the very last chapter. Did you know that Judas was the only one that was formally educated?
My dear brothers I would not have you to be ignorant, this comes by our own making. Our Creator loves us that not one should perish. May His grace be with you.

PASTORS are largely responsible for the sorry state of affairs in this country. Their 'feel good' preaching is designed to keep the coffers full so they can pay off their multi-million dollar facilities. Church has become a business, not a gathering of God-worhippers. When Jesus preached, it got him killed! When these guys preach, they fill football stadiums!
If PASTORS would 'man up' and teach the Word instead of 'self help seminars', then perhaps Christians would follow their lead instead of always selling out to the "lesser of two evils", i.e. the Republican Party.
Christians have compromised for so long, they no longer know what conviction is. Being 'non-offensive' is more valuable than the truth. Thus, Christians "heap to themselves teachers who will say what their itching ears want to hear".
Compromising Christians are responsible for the sorry leaders we choose, both in the pulpit and in government. Revival must start with us.
