Sandy Hook Shooting: Is It about Banning Guns or Banning God?

Mike Huckabee says school shootings happen because, “God is absent from our schools.” Read more below.

As the nation mourns and asks how could something like the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting happen, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee has an idea: It's because God is absent from our schools.

While speaking with Fox New's Neil Cavuto, Huckabee answered the question, "How could God let this happen?" by saying, "We've systematically removed God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools have become a place for carnage because we've made it a place where we don't want to talk about eternity, life, responsibility, accountability?"

Huckabee's words quickly made him a trending topic on Twitter, with some users applauding his comments, while others said his statement lacked empathy.

Watch him talk about it here:

Stay in the know. Get The Brody File Weekly

Bryan Fischer from the American Family Association believes the same thing. Read below:

"The question is going to come up, where was God? I thought God cared about the little children. God protects the little children. Where was God when all this went down? Here's the bottom line, God is not going to go where he is not wanted.

Now we have spent since 1962 -- we're 50 years into this now -- we have spent 50 years telling God to get lost, telling God we do not want you in our schools, we don't want to pray to you in our schools, we do not want to pray to your before football games, we don't want to pray to you at graduations, we don't want anybody talking about you in a graduation speech...

In 1962 we kicked prayer out of the schools. In 1963 we kicked God's word out of ours schools. In 1980 we kicked the Ten Commandments out of our schools. We've kicked God out of our public school system. And I think God would say to us, 'Hey, I'll be glad to protect your children, but you've got to invite me back into your world first. I'm not going to go where I'm not wanted. I am a gentlemen.'"

More here.

Guess what folks? Huckabee and Fischer are not alone. There are millions of evangelicals who believe the same thing. This is not heartless. It’s based on the biblical principle of reaping and sowing. Not that these little children sowed anything but are our schools left unprotected because of the past actions of our nation when it comes to removing God from our public schools?

The conversation is now all about banning guns but should the conversation really be about allowing God back into public schools?

Food for thought. It's a discussion worth having.

I guess people are having trouble accepting the truth that God was kicked out of the public schools. If you doubt it then why where children kept from going to see a Charlie Brown Christmas play put on by a local church because one parent complained. My advice keep your child at home and the others go. It's now up to the parents to pray over their children before they go to school. Evil exists and no matter how many gun laws are passed things like this will happen. Telling people the truth is not without compassion, it's because we love people we tell them truth so that they won't be destroyed by evil.

We can only hope that our nation will come to its senses and return to the God of our Fathers.
Jesus alone could say, "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." John 14:6

The link between this murder and the absence of prayer or religion in public schools is a non sequitor to most of us. What exactly is the nexus that links the two?

The very people who booted GOD out are the ones who ask where he is when tragedys occur. And yet are quick to ban God guns and the bible but promote violence and filth and perversion. And wonder why a young man would commit such a evil and horrid act as this and not concider that our society is feeding on evil thoughts and pictures and action constantly. They could better ask where was I. Why did I let this happen. "Suffer the little children ,and forbid them not, to come unto me for of such is the Kingdom of heaven" Where was God? outside weeping.

I feel for all those who experienced the trauma and loss of loved ones. Yes, we may be readping what we have sown. But, let us pray for the whole community, that they might experience God's comfort and that believers might step up to the plate and communicate that comfort and the love of God in the midst of their great loss. Its not about, where was God in that situation, but where is God now in those who carry Him in their hearts - to comfort those who mourn, to heal the broken hearted, and provide for those who grieve. Is. 61:1-3. Lets pray to that end, and God can bring good out of what the enemy meant for evil.

God, please shine your light of love and understanding upon everyones suffering, giving them comfort knowing that all these beautiful children are now in your presence.

We know that there are many problems in our society...breakdown of the family structure, godless households. Why is this not being the main topic of combating this evil epidemic instead of gun control?
Definition of insanity is recycling the same ideas over and over and expecting a different result. If the government is really concerned why are they not advocating for traditional family values where children are raised in stable two parent loving households and considered our most valuable assets. It really is a no brainer!

I definately agree with the author of this article. Before I read it, I posted many of the same comments on Facebook. The pattern seems to be that a young adult, socially alienated, unmarried, and has mental health issues and little emotional control becomes upset about something/anything and seems to display "no hope" for himself or the future. And he is angry enough to not just commit suicide but kill as many people who may happen to be in his sphere of acquaintence. Of course this would not hinder him from killing strangers too. Also, there is probably an element of the "copy cat" aspect. He / or she, figures if there is no hope then he might as well go out in a blaze of glory. If he cannot feel significant in life then he will feel significant in death. Well, the only Hope for mankind is Jesus Christ and what He offers us through His death and ressurrection. But He is a gentleman and will not push "religion" on to us. Christianity is sharing ones life with the Creator.

Look to see Obama pull out all the stops now on major gun control Bills in the New Year.
As sad as it is, theyve been waiting for something like this.
No mention tho, that this guy was on anti- depressants and other meds ,as well as was the Colorado Shooter,as was Gabrielle Gifford's shooter.

When we were growing up in the 50's-60's and even before these decades, there was hardly anyone who didn't own a gun. In fact the rifle racks in a pickup were full, and no one locked their homes or vehicles. We didn't even pass the thought of shooting one another. We also prayed in home and school besides church. God came first, then Country. The elderly were respected for their wisdom. God has been taken out of the Nation bit by bit by the Left Liberals, and evil invaded America by using Americas goodness against us. Our own laws have been twisted to make good seem evil and evil seem right/good. To get back what we lost, is not possible without God put back first.

When people go to prison, they are often given a Bible to read. They know or at least hope it will do some good. Why can't the officials accept that God's word also works at influencing behaviour before they get to that state? You know-"Thou shalt not kill" and "Love thy neighour as thyself", etc.

I was waiting for someone to articulate how I felt. What Mr. Huckabee and Mr. Fischer said was right. What we are seeing is the direct result of the rejection of God in our nation. This what I believe the Lord called "Blaspheming the Holy Spirit". This was not the first and sadly, it won't be the last.

Misters Brody, Fischer and Huckabee:
Please make no mistake about it: God has been and continues to be in our schools, invited or not--in the hearts and actions of all His children who know Him by Name. Organized school prayers and posted Holy Commandments aside, we should rest assured that the souls of those precious little innocents rest gently in Christ's arms now. I pray that the adults who fell to this evil gunman's actions knew the Grace of God's salvation. While I grieve the deaths of those killed by this hidieous evil actor, prayers at the school's door WILL NOT keep evil at bay, and will not keep our mortal bodies safe. Prayer taught and practiced in our churches, and more importantly in our homes, is the only way to protect our childrens' souls against all the ravages of this lost and broken world. God promises us that! Trained and armed personnel at the doors of schools protect bodies. Period!

Sometimes humans have to learn the hard way. Nevertheless, God is always watching.

If we truly believe that only those who did the shootings are guilty, then we are blind.

It is so interesting that humans still find it so easy to question God, but so hard to seek God for answers that humans do not have.

Whether or not you believe in prayer in public schools, unfortunately "having God in the school" cannot prevent these random acts of violence. Think of the 2006 Amish school shooting: http://www.cnn.com/2006/US/10/02/amish.shooting/index.html.
People who seriously think that the problem is "prayer in schools" are deluded and not facing the real debate which is about mental health, gun control (or the opposite - arming teachers), etc. Huckabee, the AFA, and by means of this editorial, CBN, are making fools of themselves and worst of all, hurting families who have suffered by suggesting that their children were murdered by "the wrath of God", as you suggest.

What Mike Huckabee said is true. If parents and schools would teach God's Word again and His Commandments, I believe that there would be far less incidents like we have been experiencing in America these past few decades.
Adam Lanza apparently wasn't taught much about the Bible and the Gospel--and he surely rejected the Love of God and the value of Life in Jesus that he desperately needed, or he wouldn't have taken the life of his mother, innocent children and teachers, or destroyed his own life in suicide. Now he has to face his Creator in judgement.
I don't believe that insanity forces one to follow evil spirits or the Devil to destroy lives. All the anti-psychotic medicines that there are can't replace the need for God and His Commands to love Him and our neighbor as ourself. I've even read that some of these anti-psychotic and anti-depressant drugs can have adverse effects on some people--especially adolescents! Also, can't understand the guns in home with his problem

My children were in public schools. The school "system" is not just about banning God for supposed equality, it actually felt like a daily attack on Christians. Every thing I believed in was challenged by the school "system" every time I sent my children to school. I am now homeschooling. I do not want my children in an environment that is so hostile toward our Savior. I quit my job earning 80,000 a year, we have made major financial adjustments. I was the bread winner. It is the best decision I have EVER made. Not only are my children now being raised in a Christ centered environment, they are now EXCELLING in their course work. My daughter was being left behind, she is now thriving! If we cannot bring our values and beliefs back into the schools, maybe our children do not belong there.

‎2 thoughts 1. How many school shootings was there when the Bible was being taught in public schools? NONE. A minority of People are trying to kick God out of this Nation well who do you think is going to move in? Also Now they are teaching Lies like evolution teaching kids they are animals with no eternal consequences so they act like one. Morality is getting worse and worse. 2. We need Armed guards in schools or at least the Principal and another person need to be armed we watch this on TV but nothing changes. Criminals know that these are gun free zones and they can kill anyone they want. If somone was armed at these schools they could stop these mad men before they do anywere near this much damage. Or we can just wait for the next school to be hit like we are doing now doing nothing to stop this.

One respondant writes, "If we truly believe that only those who did the shootings are guilty, then we are blind."
Other respondants offered similar sentiments.
Frankly, I am shocked and horrified that fellow Americans who call themselves Christians hold such evil, ideologically totalistic points of view.
People who believe as you folks do labor under visciously vituperative motivations (collective guilt)and desire to externalize the shame and profound self-loathing that was imposed upon you by mal-taught, perverted, pseudo-Christian doctrines.
You cherry-pick only the parts of the Bible which, when read out of context, appear to condone the attitude that God was attempting to humble the town of Newtown and the country by facilitating this miserable lunatic's evil deeds.
This sounds just like the vile spew from Osama bin Laden/Al Qaeda/jihadists/Iran, etc., because it buys into Satan's Big Lies designed to FOOL naive Christians and others into believing that God is an agent of evil.

its not about banning guns and its not about banning God...its about confessing our sin!
Sin is what stole the lives of the 20 innocent children, sin is what kills and destroys...not guns and not God. Sin is the cuase of every horrific deed demonstrated on this earth. Not the sin of these 20 innocent kids but the sin that resideds in the recesses of the hearts of unregenrated and unrepentant men. the truth is until we are willing to talk about sin and our need for a savior, what we saw in Newtown will continue to happen. Ther truth is God had nothing to do with this horrific deed of darkness...the reality is God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son so that whosoever believes in him would not perish but have everlasting life. the truth is until those who believe rise up, those who dont will believe will. UNtil we are willing to humble ourselves and ask for God help...he will not heal our land.

NO, this is NOT a legitimate discussion worth having! Anyone who believes that Huckabee's and Fisher's atrocious comments are proper application of the Biblical principle of "reaping and sewing" has perverted the scriptures and converted them into distorted, evil, collectivist propaganda, JUST LIKE THE ISLAMIC JIHADISTS USE to justify their war of terrorism against the West! These Islamic militants say that Allah (God) will punish all Muslims with Hell if they fail to subdue and conquer all non-believer "infidels." Also, Allah will curse the Infidel and withdraw his protection from them.

To "familylife"-- We don't yet know if it was truly volitional (sanely-derived) sinful thinking OR the horrific, violent, disturbed thoughts of an undiagnosed paranoid psychosis (due to neurological disease) which propelled the Newtown shooter to do his evil deeds.
It is tempting for conservative Christians to want to affix complete blame and culpability to anyone who commits wrongful deeds, and of course, in most cases, doing so is appropriate. But in a few cases, people are truly mentally ill and incapable of what I will call rationally-willful volitional thought.
Christian traditionalists/conservatives often believe that persons over the age of accountability are NEVER out of control of their own wills and thought processes bc. these Christians make inferences based loosely upon Biblical doctrine, which states that God gave mankind free will/free agency. Yet the Bible does not specifically rule out the existence of mental illness.
Don't confuse the general with the specific.

>> We also need basic values and self-control taught in schools.

To familylife on Dec.19: WE have the power to rise up together and find ideologically and politically CENTRIST MODERATE (neither conserv. nor leftist) solutions to our society's complex problems!
But I'm afraid we WON'T because each side is irreversibly wedded to their own belief system. Each defines themselves by it!
The sensible and smart thing to do would be to SPLIT UP America into three NEW versions of America: Christian conservative theonomy, progressive-left, and moderate centrist.
The large majority of continental US America, as well as Alaska, would constitute the conservative America. Rights of access and use of seaports, railways, airports, freeways and highways, and natural resources like water and power would be guaranteed, protected, and legally protected at market prices.
The leftist new America, would be located along long strips of land running along the West and east coasts, ending just below Northern Virginia, and including the metropolitan Great Lakes region

With all due respect, I think we have to be careful that we do not substitute a secular conservative ideology, even one that professes to be Christian, for biblical Christianity. My God never left a classroom. He cannot be bullied. He cannot be banned. He cannot be chased away from anything or anyplace.

The God of Scripture is omnipresent and omnipotent. Children can indeed pray in public schools, and they often do. What is impermissible, in this nation that protects religious liberty, is pray aloud a prayer that is prescribed by someone else, someone who may nor may not share the student's beliefs, or those of his/her parents.

I am a committed Christian, but Rev. Huckabee does not speak for me. It is sad, very sad, that God's wrath is invoked in response to the senseless murder of 6 and 7 year old children. Maybe it explains why t-shirts with the slogan "In Glock We Trust" are selling well, along with semi-automatic handguns and semi-automatic assault weapons.

I agree with vetanalyst.God was not thrown out from public schools by atheists in 1962.In fact, churches, synagogues, and other religious groups were pushing for the law that came out in 1962 and the Supreme Court decision. To say that Sandy Hook is reaping what we sowed 50 years ago is ridiculous to the highest degrees. There been shootings in Amish schools,Jewish schools,Christian schools,in churches,in synagogues,in mosques, and in Sikh temples.Don't tell me it was because they reject God out of their buildings. The violence started long before 1962.I remember reading articles about upward amounts of violence since WWII,and growing juvenile delinquencies in 1950s,while there were still teacher-led prayers in schools and even Bible lessons. Is it any wonder I don't trust people like Pat Robertson and his ilk is because they lie a lot about what is really going on.

I agree with those who said that we kicked God out of the Schools of America and how can we ask Him to protect our children in schools when we reject him as our creator and Saviour! How dare people to ask God where are you? When they curse and protest against Him when a student wants to thank God for being there for them as they graduated from high school! Some people want to stop christians from sharing their faith in schools, military,etc.. but when tragedy strikes they want to blame God or ask where is he. Hypocrites aren't just in church they're out there swearing at God as unbelievers and asking Him whom they don't believe in where are you? Wow! How confused can such ideology be so crazy!! The Lord God promises blessings if we follow Him and curses if we reject Him. He lifts His hand of protection away when we choose to shut Him out of our lives. It's called freedom of choice!!! We have to face the consequences when we reject Him! Let's get back to God and find PEACE!
