Only on Brody File: Rick Santorum Says Ames Iowa Straw Poll 'Probably Not a Wise Expenditure of Funds'

Rick Santorum tells The Brody File that it probably makes sense that the Ames, Iowa Straw Poll becomes a thing of the past because it “is probably not a wise expenditure of funds when it is not proven to be a great determiner as to who ends up winning the Caucus.”

Santorum won Iowa in 2012 and placed fourth in the Straw Poll. Michele Bachmann won the Straw Poll but fared poorly in the Caucus.

Santorum stopped by The Brody File this past Tuesday. The interview will air on next week’s Brody File show.

David Brody: Two quick last questions. There’s been some news about the Iowa Straw Poll, and this idea that, even some big wigs out there in Iowa say...

Rick Santorum: Yeah, the governor.

Brody: The governor, by the way a big wig, says it’s antiquated. Look, Iowa, they love you in Iowa, you love them.

Santorum: Yeah. The Straw Poll, we didn’t really play in the Straw Poll.

Brody: You finished fourth.

Santorum: We finished fourth. We just wanted, we saw the Straw Poll as an opportunity for us to organize on a grassroots with no money, we really spent nothing. You had some candidates spend $2, $3 million on the Straw Poll and one of them ended up out of the race because they didn’t do well.

I think Terry (Brandstad, Iowa Governor) probably has it right, this is, it’s probably an exercise that is, it’s an interesting exercise, our feeling was we didn’t want to play in that, we were focused on the Caucus. And, I think if you look at the results of the Straw Poll, very few people that won the Straw Poll went on to win the Caucus.

So, you know, I don’t know whether they’re going to go forward or not. My feeling is if we end up doing this, we’ll do the same thing. We’ll focus on the Caucus, not the Straw Poll. That’s not, that doesn’t matter to us, that’s not going to decide, as we’ve seen who wins it.

And I would say to other candidates, spending millions of dollars on a Straw Poll, when money is scarce is probably not a wise expenditure of funds when it is not proven to be a great determiner as to who ends up winning the Caucus. And I think that’s why Terry said what he said.

Brody: Gotcha.

Santorum: That’s why others out in Iowa, it doesn’t mean that there can’t be some event, or there can’t be an opportunity for the Iowa party to do something during around the State Fair, which is usually what this is. But I’m not sure that that’s going to be the best thing, but we’ll wait and see what happens.
