While Paul Ryan will no doubt help energize the conservative base for the fall campaign, here’s the real issue: Will the Romney/Ryan ticket be ready for the battle over Medicare?
They will have to convince independent and undecided voters that their future plan for Medicare makes sense. This is not an easy sell. You can’t just trot out the line about how your grandkids future is at stake. You have to go beyond that.
Picking Ryan is a bold move for sure but it could ultimately be disastrous if the campaign doesn’t have a real and yet simple effective communications message about how to sell the future of Medicare to the American people.
Time will tell.
