Exclusive: Gingrich Tells The Brody File His Goal is to Slow Romney Down and Expose Him

In an exclusive interview with The Brody File, Newt Gingrich says one of his goals is to, “keep Romney from being in the position to rush the nomination.”

Gingrich told me, “The longer this goes on, the more clear it is how un-conservative his record is, the more difficult it will be for Romney to survive in this race.”

Gingrich also told The Brody File that with regards to New Hampshire, “If he’s under 40 percent in one of his three strongest states, he has a big problem about trying to communicate why he should be the nominee.”

The Brody File went aboard Gingrich’s bus in Manchester, N.H., Sunday afternoon. Watch the video below along with the full transcription.

By the way, The Brody File has two words to sum up what these next two weeks are going to be like in the lead up to South Carolina: Political bloodbath.

David Brody: New Hampshire. What’s a realistic expectation? What’s going through your mind in terms of what you’d like to do here?

Newt Gingrich: Well, I think we have two goals here. One is to do respectively enough, recognizing that all the votes are split and we’re not spending any resources here. The other is to define Romney increasingly as a Massachusetts moderate who called himself a progressive, just a few years ago. And to begin to set the stage for the showdown in South Carolina, between a Reagan conservative and a Massachusetts moderate, and I think we’ve had a great five days or six days so far.

We came in very, very late Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning, and have been campaigning non-stop ever since. I can’t tell you what percent we’ll get, because Huntsman has been here forever, Ron Paul is running for election for the third or fourth time, but I think that we will do well enough to be serious and I think that at least what we’re seeing right now is that Romney is starting to decay, and that could be very, very exciting.

Brody: You mention South Carolina. Talk to me about the perimeters, how you see that going, because up here in New Hampshire, it’s more of a home game for Romney. Down there, it’s different.

Gingrich: This is Romney’s third best state, after Utah and Massachusetts. So, if he doesn’t do really well here - And remember, after five years of campaigning and $20 million, he got 25 percent of Iowa. So, three out of four Iowans said no. Now, he’s here in the back door to where he was governor. The last poll showed him at 35 percent. I think if he’s under 40 percent in one of his three strongest states, he has a big problem about trying to communicate why he should be the nominee.

When we get to South Carolina - and we’ve been splitting the votes up among a whole bunch of conservatives, as you know - when we get to South Carolina, I think it will be increasingly clear that there’s a fundamental choice. You have somebody who is from Georgia who is a solid conservative, and you have somebody from Massachusetts who is a solid moderate.

And, I think that’s what it will come down to. Perry will probably still be there. Ron Paul will be in his own world, doing what he does, and Santorum has had a good run, and we’ll see over the course of the next two weeks to what degree between Perry, Santorum and me, how that shakes out.

But, I think one of my goals is to keep Romney from being in the position to rush the nomination. The longer this goes on, the more clear it is how un-conservative his record is, the more difficult it will be for Romney to survive in this race. And, so the next two weeks become really a big deal.

Newt is going to expose Romney? How can anyone take Gingrich seriously. He takes $1.6 million as Fannie Mae's (corporate historian). Fined $300,000 for ethics violations while in congress. Was cheating with his third wife while married to his second wife. He used his first wife's cancer to garner sympathy on the campaign trail and then dumps her while she is in the hospital when it is over. I'm not a fan of Romney but I'll take him over Newt seven days a week and twice on Sundays.

Team Gingrich's, character is exiguity at best. Mitt Romney is a proven business man. Self made, not Government made, that's the difference between Newt, and Romney! And, Gingrich is also a sure bet to loose against team Obama. Mitt Romney is our only chance to defeat Obama!

I have noticed that Ron Paul ads and statements took partial truths and used them out of context.
That is not POLITICS, that is telling lies in my book.

I hope Gingrich will not engage in the same.
LIES NEVER HELPED ANYONE.

# Gingrich

Gingrich continues to reveal his true spiteful nature and
why he should never be elected to any office. Whether
the tea people like it or not, Romney is the only
electable candidate. The longer this process drags on,
the more ridiculous the Republican Party looks.

I am a Romney supporter but I agree with
Gingrich in that it's best that all these arguments against Romney come out now in the primaries so that he can form his responses. The going will be much tougher against the Obama machine in the fall.

Romney may have been in Iowa longer than Gingrich but it is inaccurate to say he's been campaigning there actively during this time. He only had 5 staff members on the ground there this time and made it clear Iowa was not going to be heavily visited.
If Romney can get less than 40%? What's that say for Gingrich who will be lucky to get 12% in New Hampshire. As more Republican challengers fall out, especially Huntsman, Romney, not Gingrich will benefit. With a straight party primary with no crossovers, Romney will do well in Florida. But finally, if Gingrich's homestate, Georgia won't vote for him, how does he think he will do anywhere else? Gingrich has too much baggage to win.

Hey Newt,
Instead of trying to slow down Mitt (negative)
Why not try to speed up your game?

We need to rid ourselves of Barry or this country is toast

My advice to Newt: Find the two people in this country that have a favorable opinion of you and make them your spokesperson. Everytime you open your mouth you prove yourself an angry old man or a crazy old uncle at best. Stop humiliating yourself and shut up !

Newt is attempting to divert attention from his own serious problems: (1) Corruption, e.g., a $1.6 million in kickbacks from Freddie Mac for favors received (2) Ethical breaches: $300K fines for ethics violations from his own colleagues (3) Dishonorable character, e.g., multiple betrayals of each of his wives (4) Hypocrisy: e.g., attacked Clinton's adultery, while Newt secretly conducted his own affairs. Finally, people that worked with and for Gingrich, seem to despise the guy.

There is something unbalanced about Gingrich. Perhaps he has inherited his mother's Bipolar disorder. Why would his goal not be to win the nomination himself? Why is he so obsessed with bringing Romney down; when he has said on several occasions that if he wins the nomination, he will support him? Even though he has said some pretty nasty things about him (such as calling him a liar)... I think there's something seriously wrong with Gingrich.

(1) Corruption, e.g., a $1.6 million in kickbacks from Freddie Mac for favors received

Eighty four politically motivated ethics charges were filed against Newt when he was Speaker of the House regarding the use of tax exempt funds for a college course he taught titled “Renewing American Civilization.” Eighty-three of the eighty-four charges were found to be without merit and dropped. The remaining charge had to do with contradictory documents prepared by Newt’s lawyer supplied during the course of the investigation. Newt took responsibility for the error and agreed to reimburse the committee the cost of the investigation into that discrepancy. In 1999, after a 3 ½ year investigation, the Internal Revenue Service (under President Bill Clinton, nonetheless) concluded that Gingrich did not violate any tax laws, leading renowned CNN Investigative Reporter Brooks Jackson to remark on air “it turns out [Gingrich] was right and those who accused him of tax fraud were wrong.”

Gingrich is a disgusting selfish person but he is succeeding at getting Obama reelected.

Being "conservative" is not a requirement to be President. Being "Liberal" is not a requirement to be President. Being sensible and good at organizing people is useful and there is nothing wrong with moderation.

I have emailed Newt's people several times about his juvenile, thin-skinned response to the political ads attacking him. Whether we like it or not, it seems that modern politics allows and expects that "facts" will be twisted. Gingrich is hardly the one to throw stones, coming from his glass house. I actually considered him my guy until he reacted so poorly to the ads against him. Man Up! Our mission should be to rid ourselves of this Obama Scourge, no matter who gets the Republican nomination! Attacking Mitt by Newt for his own petty retribution will only help Obummer's peeps. The Libs are laughing as the Republicans once again "eat their own"!

Gingrich needs a new campaign agenda and this is what it should be.

No more Mr. Nice Guy.

Does anyone really truly believe that Mitt Romney has the stomach for the hardball and thuggery Obama adn the media are going to unleash on him?

Does anyone truly believe that a Nice-Guy approach is what we need to force our do-nothing congress to get off it's butt, stop being self-serving and pass the legislation needed to pave the way for a real recovery?

Conservatives need a tough candidate who calls it like he sees it. That might be Ron Paul were it nor for Dr. Paul's isolationism and his uncanny resemblance to Jeff Dunham's Walter Dummy. See for yourself:

# Gingrich

Listening to Republicans condemn Romney for being a
successful capitalist is mind-boggling. If Romney's
current views are in line with the party, who cares that
he has held different views in the past? How much is
Obama's campaign paying Newt? I can think of no other
excuse for his behavior. If the country wants a spiteful
jerk to be the candidate, Newt's the guy.

# Romney a pro- abortion liberal

Romney ran as a liberal, and governed as one in Massachusetts. He was consistently pro abortion, instituted a state healthcare plan that has failed, and has been the consummate politician who's "ideals" fit whatever group he is pandering to. ANYONE is better as the GOP candidate! Romney is Mccain 2.0.

I feel sorry for Speaker Gingrich that the GOP
establishment and the Republican party members
forgot what he did for the GOP many years ago.
Many people always see the dark side of Newt
never praise him for his accomplishments in his
life.I know the high ranking people in the
party were mad at him because he did not get
along G H W Bush was President.
Former Governor Mitt Romney was a loser a few times. He will lose again to President Obama.
Only Newt can beat President Obama.
I pray GOD to help him win the hearts of all
people so Newt will protect us from evil
people who have killed over three thousand
American people abroad and at home.Do not
forget 9/11/2001 sons and daughters of GOD.
