Mitt Romney: Mr. Negative

Reporting from Sioux City, Iowa, today:

Mitt Romney is going negative. Newt Gingrich is trying to stay positive. We’re about to find out which tactic will work.

I would think that Romney’s negative attacks would erode Gingrich’s poll numbers. Remember, Ron Paul is running negative ads against Gingrich, too, so it’s going to take a toll.

The question is how much? I can tell you this: Ever since I’ve landed in Iowa and flipped on the television, there have been tons of campaign ads blasting Newt.

I think what we’re going to see is Newt stay positive with his campaign ads but zing Romney in debates and in other spots with reporters in one on one interviews.

By the way, it’s one thing to go negative but it’s quite another to get personal. Romney is getting nasty when he calls Gingrich, “zany” and “erratic.” Is that really called for?

Romney clearly doesn’t care but it's one thing to draw a contrast. It's quite another to resort to name calling. Romney has shown he’ll do anything to win the nomination.

And that’s been his big problem all along with GOP voters. They think he’ll do or say anything to get elected.

Mr. Brody, what is your problem?

Mitt needs to reveal to the voters what the media is failing to reveal: that Newt Gingrich is morally corrupt! His extramarital affairs during his first two marriages, especially when his wives were quite ill, is despicable behavior and should be condemned by everybody, but especially evangelicals. I am a conservative Republican and I could NEVER vote for Newt Gingrich. Do you know how depressed I would be if the Republicans nominated somebody I couldn't vote for when I think President Obama would finish his work of destroying our country if he is reelected for another term?

Mr Romney and Mr Paul need to be convey to the public what a bad person and leader that Newt Gingrich is and would be as President!!!!!

After newt telling Romney he'd "be a career politician had he beaten Ted Kennedy in 1994," why not pound on Newt? Newt is nothing more than a bombastic, egomaniacal, and wind bag bomb thrower.

Many believe Romney's too nice and perhaps unwilling to fight--you know that Mormon impression? He's showing that if you put him on stage with Obama--he fights.

Final thought. No matter what Romney does Mr. Brody would fault him. And why is it that Romney will "say anything to get elected," but Ron Paul's skewering Newt even worse gets no mention?

Double standard? Will Ron Paul say anything to get the nomination? My bet is what Mr Brody doesn't like is Newt's poll numbers are evaporating before our eyes.

You comments are precisely correct. I am terribly disappointed and turned off by Romney's brutal personal attack on Newt. Who's coaching Romney, Obama?

This is opinion is almost laughable isn't it? Romney's comments that Newt is "zany" or "erratic" are personal attacks? Are you serious? Governor Romney has been more than kind in his descriptions of the former speaker. The comments against Newt that would be considered personal are those comments from his ex wives, former colleagues in the House and former campaign staff, in other words the people that know him best. Romney has been more than fair with Newt and if you don't like it perhaps the real problem is with the man you are trying so hard to defend, face it those that know Newt best do not think very highly of him and compare that with those that know Governor Romney best. Those that know Mitt Romney and have worked with Mitt Romney or have been married to Mitt Romney know and respect the man that he is! Face it, Newt is a BAD apple and those that know him best agree, Romney calling him "zany" and "erratic" are compliments to what those than know him best call him.

Mitt Romney's negative comments about Newt Gingrich most certainly ARE personal attacks but they won't work. The fact that Romney is dropping fast in every poll but one is proof of that.

Yep. zany old Newt. Led the Republican revolution that captured the House and the Senate for the first time in generations. Effected the Contract with America. Balanced the budget under a Democratic president. Yep, zany old Newt. I don't care how many of the Republican elite or his divorced wives don't like him. If he has the ideas and courage to face down the establishment, Republican or Democrat, to get us out of the hole we are in, he's my guy. Ask yourself who was in charge as we began our slide into oblivion. Not zany old Newt. More likely his detractors.

So, is his negative advertising as negative as the stuff you have tossed his direction in the last several years? Just asking.

See there's this thing called the 'golden rule' that might come into play between this outlet and the candidate.

And Newt's bit about the laid off workers is just not true. Whatever Romney's other faults, cheap shots are not positives.

Of all media outlets I would expect this one to notstrain at a gnat and swallow a camel just because you have chosen a favorite.

"While you waste time attacking each other, creating ill will and dissention within the party, and causing the American people to lose faith in the GOP as a whole, you need to ask yourself; Is this productive to actually solving the problems we have? Are these attacks showing the kind of leadership principles and positive attitude we need at this time, with millions out of work and the worst president in modern history in the White House?."
Isn’t your story /campaign strong enough to stand on it’s own without adding the negative Ad’s factor? If not why?

# RE: Mitt Romney: Mr. Negative

Obama or the Leftist Democrats do not need to attack Newt because the GOP Establishment is doing it for them. With friends like that who needs the leftists? Obama and the DNC can now save their money for the general election attacks. How nice... GOP Establishment, Who’s side are you on, Are you trying to get Obama reelected? This is not how honorable and principled people act, nor are they the actions of those who want to be our leaders, not to mention that they are the least desirable actions of people wanting to be the leaders of the greatest nation on earth.
Is this the behavior of a good American or Christian, under the eyes of GOD?
God gave us freewill, and this is the path you choose?

# RE: Mitt Romney: Mr. Negative

Actually, Mitt did not come up with the "Zany" label. His interviewer used that term in the question, referring to Gingrich. Mitt just answered the question posed and said "Zany is not what we need in a president." So no responsible journalist should say that Mitt called Newt zany. It did not happen!
