Mitt Romney is playing the marriage card on Newt Gingrich but don’t expect it to get much traction. Romney is playing sneaky with his latest ad below.
If Romney was being totally honest in the message he was trying to get across, the transcription of the campaign ad really should have said the following:
“I’ve been married for 45 years. Newt Gingrich has had a messy marital life, so c’mon folks, really? You need to vote for me.”
Earth to the Romney campaign: While Newt’s marital problems of the past will turn off some evangelicals it’s not enough to derail him or even defeat him at the margins. Newt’s transgressions are in the past and there are plenty of evangelicals out in Iowa, South Carolina, and elsewhere willing to overlook them.
GOP primary voters in this election are looking for an over-the-top figure who has a confrontational, bombastic nature to take on President Obama and provide bold ideas. Gingrich is tapping into that sentiment. Plain and simple.
