In an interview with The Brody File over the weekend in Des Moines, Iowa, co-frontrunner Newt Gingrich praised his wife and derided critics by saying, “there have been lies told about her (Callista Gingrich, his wife) and lies told about the campaign to her disadvantage and it's not fair.”
The Brody File was on the road this weekend with Gingrich in Iowa. We are working on a behind-the-scenes national profile story that will air on "The 700 Club" in the next few weeks.
In the meantime, we are releasing a little bit of our television interview that we did with him on the road. Watch the clip along with transcription below.

David Brody: Callista (Gingrich) is a tough one. She's a fighter. But I'm assuming you're very protective of her as well.
Newt Gingrich: Yes, well, there have been lies told about her and lies told about the campaign to her disadvantage, and it's not fair. Look, she is a public figure in the sense that if you're going to run for president you're running as a couple, inevitably there's some of that. But also, I think there's a general principal of spouses being fairly out of bounds, and people not taking shots.
She's certainly formed very good friendships with all of the other spouses. It's kind of like we're on this team effort here where we're all going down the same road, we're all experiencing the same things.
And she's frankly so busy between singing at the Basilica (Church) and playing in the community band, and now with her book, going around. She was just doing a children's book signing today and reading to little kids. So she's really busy without regard to politics. And then, of course there's politics on top of that.”
Brody: How crucial has she been to your mental sanity through this process?
Gingrich: “Oh, 100 percent. I don't think I'd be here today without her. Three times, when it was really bad this summer, the two worst months of a 53 year career, were June and July this summer. Twice she just said, ‘Get to the debates. Just endure it, and get to the debates.’
And she did it with such a calm, solid way that she made it possible to get through those two months, and the debates were sort of like she thought they'd be.
