Brody File Exclusive: GOP Presidential Candidates Will be Asked to Sign a Marriage Vow

The Brody File has learned that The Family Leader, an influential pro-family group in Iowa will ask each of the 2012 presidential candidates to sign a marriage pledge that professes everything from marital fidelity to embracing a federal marriage amendment.

The document, which has a total of 14 points is called, “The Marriage Vow - A Declaration of Dependence Upon Marriage and Family.”

The Family Leader will hold a press conference on the west steps of the Iowa state capitol building on Thursday at 11 a.m. to provide more details.

The organization’s CEO Bob Vander Plaats, a major conservative evangelical leader in Iowa and was Mike Huckabee’s state chair in 2008, told The Brody File that any candidate who declines to sign the document would NOT be receiving the endorsement of The Family Leader.

Some of the 14 points within the document are as follows:

- Personal fidelity to his/her spouse
- Appointing faithful constitutionalists as judges
- Opposition to any redefinition of marriage
- Support for the legal advocacy for the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)
- Humane efforts to protect women and children, (sex trafficking, pornography, etc.)
- Rejection of anti-women Sharia Islam
- Commitment to downsizing government because of the burden to the American family

The document will also cite statistics in an attempt to lay out the case as to why traditional marriage is threatened in America.

Vander Plaats tells me that this marriage pledge is vitally necessary because the sanctity of marriage is in crisis and leadership is desperately needed.

“We realize we fall short of God's standards," he said. "It’s not about beating people up for past mistakes. Rather, it is a recognition of a severe crisis. There has got to be a higher standard.”

# Marriage Vow a Convoluted Mess

This "Marriage Vow" is a convoluted mess!

Instead of sticking with a palatable statement like, "Marriage is between a man and a woman", they threw in a slew of specific statements some may see at odds with one another.

For instance, a Federalist who wants non-activist, constitutionalist judges may oppose DOMA because he sees marriage as a states rights issue.

Likewise, the spousal fidelity clause is too restrictive as one may face a crisis in the future that tears his/her marriage apart. Would that then disqualify them from office?

Conservative groups have been promoting these pledges, contracts, and declarations for years. They are not effectively cooperating to develop a culture but bullying potential candidates to ascribe their positions. They aren't arbiters of "a higher standard". When they latch onto a set of position statements they foster this environment of division.

Most of these are good values that Christians should be encouraging and practicing. However, while it is good for us all to support good values and leaders, I'm not sure that it is in accord with God's word or will for us to go out under the banner of Christianity and make demands in the political realm. Christ himself declared that His Kingdom is not of this world. Never did he encourage us to go out and fight for political causes as His followers. Our mandate, as Christians, is to preach the good news of salvation in and through Christ alone, to love God and our neighbor. We are also told to pray for our leaders that we may live in peace. But never are we instructed to go out under Christ's banner and wage political battles or to demand that the world live our values. Under the banner of Christ, I'm not so sure we're on solid ground. By draggin it into the policial realm, are we unwittingly making Christianity of the world?
