House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) downplayed Thursday the possibility that conservative Democrats would threaten passage of a final health-care bill over the abortion issue, telling reporters that at least some of the lawmakers may be open to persuasion.

Rep. Bart Stupak (Mich.), the most outspoken of the House Democratic abortion foes, has warned that around a dozen votes could be at stake, if the House proceeds with a plan to pass the Senate version of the health-care bill. That legislation takes a less restrictive approach than does a similar House measure to the issue of abortion coverage in government-subsidized insurance plans.

Stupak and his bloc favor a version that would bar the use of federal subsidies to purchase policies that cover elective abortions. The Senate bill allows people to purchase policies, but requires a separate payment for abortion coverage.

Pelosi questioned whether Stupak's allies were as firm in their opposition to the Senate bill as the Michigan Democrat. "They haven't said that to me," she told reporters.
