President Obama's Transgender Appointment

President Obama has appointed a transgender woman named Amanda Simpson to be the Senior Technical Advisor to the Department of Commerce. It's the first time a President has appointed an openly transgender person. You've got to hand it to the President on this one. He delivered on his campaign slogan because this is definitely "Change you can believe in."

Oy-vey. Someone hand me an Advil. I wonder how this is going to play in the heartland.

Here is Simpson's statement:

Amanda Simpson: "I'm truly honored to have received this appointment and am eager and excited about this opportunity that is before me. And at the same time, as one of the first transgender presidential appointees to the federal government, I hope that I will soon be one of hundreds, and that this appointment opens future opportunities for many others."

I know. I know. There will be those who say all that matters is whether or not Simpson is qualified for the job. And I know there will be those who will wonder why I am even writing about this considering there may be more important topics to discuss but here's a newsflash for you: The transgender thing doesn't play well with millions of conservative Evangelicals. Sorry if Biblical absolutes offend you or are so "1950 ish" but don't think conservative Evangelicals are apologizing for it.

I understand President Obama won't be after die hard conservative Evangelicals in 2012 but let's remember that moves like this don't play well with the million of conservative Independent voters and Catholics who will be up for grabs again in 2012 as well. A move like this could easily be part of a liberal ammunition package against the President in 2012. Hey, remember how he won North Carolina and Indiana in 2008? You think those conservative minded states may listen a little more closely when they hear the word "transgender?"  Oh, and one more thing. I know the economy is the big story but don't think for a second stories like this don't resonate in people's minds. They do. It's part of the psychology of voting and it all lumps in with a larger portrait. Can anyone say Chai Feldblum? Research here.

The story is here. Below, The Brody File has found a couple clips of Simpson giving an interview on a show called "Political Perspectives". The subtitle? "Transgender Realities".

In the clip below, go about 5:45 in to hear Simpson explain why she decided to make the change. (the guy you see in the clip below is NOT Amanda Simpson. It is just another transgender person.)

In this clip, go about 1:05 in to hear Simpson discuss the fallout from her transgender move. (Simpson is shown below)

Some people make me embarrassed to be a conservative, that’s for sure.

They don’t take matters of National Security seriously.

The Job this gal is taking on involves making sure US technology that can be useful for making advanced weaponry – or Furby dolls – doesn’t fall into the wrong hands. It requires absolutely the best possible person for the job, with extensive experience in defence technology, or one day a US city is going to be froth on top of a mushroom cloud.

Simpson has more than 30 years of experience in the aerospace and defense industry, most recently serving as Deputy Director in Advanced Technology Development at Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson, Arizona.

She also holds degrees in physics, engineering and business administration. She is a certified flight instructor and test pilot with 20 years of experience.

Rocket Scientists with degrees in both Business Administration and Engineering who are available are pretty darned rare. That's what you need though.

I wonder why "the transgender thing" does not "play well" with millions of Christian Evangelicals?

Aren't Isaiah 56, Matt. 19:12 and Acts 8 in the Bible? Don't those three interconnected passages count, including one in which Jesus Himself recognizes that "For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake."

It has been said that what we do to the least of God's people, we do to God. Francis of Assisi had to embrace a leper to be saved.

There are those out there who must overcome their fear of people who are created different by God, and give that hug. If Amanda Simpson or another transgender person is standing between you and being numbered among the goats, perhaps it's a good time to give her a hug (see Matthew 25, in context).

David, you wrote, "I know. I know. There will be those who say all that matters is whether or not Simpson is qualified for the job." But I didn't hear a counterargument other than your repeated but unexplained sense that this appointment won't "play well" What's the argument that she shouldn't get the job because she's transgender?

Ignorance is swallowing a pick for a crucial national job when the people who picked him have a history of appointing child molesters, tax cheats and radicals. What is the Job Description? Doesn't matter, he's transgender! But what do you get when you let a man who thinks he's a woman choose who we sell weapons to? You get more confused decisions. "I'm not a man I'm a woman, They aren't terrorists in search of weapons, they are underdeveloped nation needing a stronger defense." It's leadership like this that gets us crotch bombers.
As for all this aerospace experience I really have to wonder if this transgender activist worked his way up with a security pass in one hand and a civil rights lawsuit in the other.

markd4lyph - re "civil rights lawsuit" - it's notorious that transgendered people aren't covered by the Civil Rights Act. Even now, despite Obama's pledge to remedy that, and the changes on the websites, if she gets fired for being Transgendered, she can complain to the OSC, that's all.

The OSC has neither the power to act, nor even investigate, such complaints. Congress hasn't authorised it through legislation.

Ms Simpson was responsible for getting Raytheon to change company policy in that regard. Before then, they could have fired her at any time, just because she's TS, and she would have no recourse, either federal or State.
