President Obama's Crash Course in "Threading the Needle"

I don't know if President Obama is any good at sewing but he may want to take a crash course in how to "Thread the Needle".

He's going to need to know how to do it to survive politically after his Afghan strategy speech Tuesday night.

This is a tough one for the President. On the one hand, he is going to have to put out fire after fire in his own party because they (for the most part) want him to get out Afghanistan and want nothing to do with tens of thousands of more troops. That's a tough job in and of itself. Yet on the other hand, he's got to be hawkish enough to assure the Afghan government and people that America is not going to leave them high and dry. If President Karzai and his buddies sense a bunch of exit strategies, then real partnership may become problematic.

Oh yes, there's one more audience the President needs to address: The American people. With a majority of Americans questioning this war, the President is going to have to break through all the clutter and hope that Americans understand HOW this war in Afghanistan comes to an end.

I know there's quite a bit of talk about how the Karzai government is the key ingredient here. Obviously that aspect is very important. But I think what will end up being even more crucial is how President Obama deals with his own party.

There is the potential here for a serious uprising led by anti-war liberals in Congress. If the Democratic controlled Congress gives him problems on his Afghan strategy (which is a definite possibility), then the President's policy could be seriously undermined. If that happens, why would America's allies and the Karzai government want to play along on an Afghan strategy that may not even have the backing of President Obama's own party?

The Democratic Party has been known for infighting before. Examples? How about the 1968 convention, Kennedy vs. Carter in 1980, 1994 Election debacle, Clinton vs Obama in 2008, healthcare reform today and now the Afghan war strategy.

This move by Obama puts the Democratic Party into treacherous territory. What will they do? Maybe liberal Dems will turn on the President and host a TV special. Watch below to see what song will be used as the opener.
