White House To Host "Hate Crimes Bill" Reception

The White House just released a media advisory saying that the President will be signing the 2010 National Defense Authorization Act into Law on Wednesday. Of course tucked inside that massive bill is the "Hate Crimes Bill". It's official title is the "Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act."

On that media release, The White House says the following event will take place in the East Room of The White House:

Later that day, the President will host a reception to commemorate the enactment of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.  He will deliver brief remarks at 6:05 PM, and will be joined by Attorney General Eric Holder, civil rights community leaders and others.

The White House is going to play up this Hate Crimes bill big time with the gay community. This is a HUGE victory for gays across America. It's been a long battle to enact it into law (and to fight against it too)

By the way,is it just me or does it just seem plain wrong that a non-germane bill like this Hate Crimes Bill should be attached to a Defense Authorization Bill? I mean, look, I get it. I know this type of stuff is done all the time by both Republicans and Democrats. But let's face it. this Hate Crimes Bill had to be attached to this Defense Bill because it would have run into problems as a stand alone bill.

The President really can't complain anymore about non-germane amendments in a bill since he's about to sign this unrelated one into law.

True, the Hate Crimes amendment was attached to the Defense Appropriations bill as a "rider." And don't think there was anything particularly sneaky or unprecedented about it. According to Wikipedia, "The use of riders is prevalent and customary in the Congress of the United States, as there are no legal or other limitations on their use. Riders are most effective when attached to an important bill, such as an appropriation bill, because to veto or postpone such a bill could delay funding to governmental programs, causing serious problems."

So there is nothing new about this. Democrats and Republicans both do it. The practice knows no political boundaries.

But as far as the hate crimes amendment goes, let me reassure you: The current hate crimes law has been on the books since 1969, and NEVER over the past 40 years has someone been prosecuted for expressing prejudice against members of a race or a religious group. I doubt that will change because sexual orientation is included.

[The following was just seen on the internet]

OBAMA LOVES HATE BILL

Go ahead, Mr. President. Sign the "hate" bill. By doing so you will help to fulfill the predicted repeat of the "days of Lot" in Luke 17 - days which today seem anxious to outperform their ancient counterparts! You have already been helping to fulfill the predicted repeat of the "days of Noah" in the same chapter - that is, violence towards the unborn which presently is matching, if not surpassing, the violence that forced God in Genesis 6 to announce that He would soon destroy everyone except Noah and his family. Mr. President, by helping to fulfill both of the above "days" you will discover that God has His Almighty veto over what you say and do!

C'mon Polish, you know as well as I do that as soon as the militant gay lobby gets ahold of this new tool, they will make sure that people are prosecuted - or at least harrassed by the threat of prosecution.
