Boehner Slams Obama and Democrats on Abortion and Health Care

House Minority Leader John Boehner is slamming the Obama administration and the Democrats for their efforts to get abortion included as a subsidized health care reform benefit. He has penned an op-ed in National Review this morning. The full article is here. A couple of key excerpts are below:

When most Americans talk about the need for health-care reform, they’re usually talking about the need to address rising health-care costs; they aren’t talking about the need for taxpayers to subsidize abortion. In fact, a November 2008 Zogby poll revealed 71 percent of Americans oppose government-funded abortion.

It seems Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill don’t share this perspective, however. With the unequivocal support of President Obama, they’ve written a health-care bill that won’t lower health-care costs for American families, but will require them to subsidize abortion with their hard-earned tax dollars.

The legislation's abortion-related language stands as Exhibit A. How many Americans currently realize the House bill contains provisions that will result in federally mandated coverage of abortion on demand in virtually all of America's health plans?

Fact: The bill as currently written will allow the federal government to classify abortion as an "essential benefit" — a health-care right that would be guaranteed to all Americans. This will make it illegal for health-care providers nationwide — even Catholic and religious-based hospitals with missions that reflect a fundamental moral objection to the killing of the unborn — to provide anything less than abortion on demand for anyone who seeks it. As a result, the bill will repeal laws in many states that currently require commonsense limitations on abortion-on-demand, such as mandatory parental notification and waiting periods.

Fact: The bill would also establish a taxpayer-funded "public" health-care plan to "compete" with private-sector plans. This public plan, like all plans, will be required to classify abortion as an "essential benefit," forcing American citizens to directly subsidize abortion-on-demand with their tax dollars. And in addition to the public plan, individuals with incomes of up to 400% of the poverty level will receive subsidies to buy insurance to pay for abortion-on-demand.

...given its controversial nature, it deserves a full and open public debate — the sort of debate that is impossible when major bills are rammed through Congress based on politically driven timetables.

If a health-care bill doesn't lower costs for middle-class families, but does require them to subsidize abortion-on-demand with their hard-earned tax dollars, one has to ask a fundamental question: For whom was this bill actually written? Was it written for the millions of Americans who were promised a health-care bill that lowers costs? Or is it really for the radical special-interest and lobbying groups that invested millions to elect a cooperative president and Congress?

Health care is too important to get wrong. Too much is at stake. For the sake of American families struggling with health-care costs — most of whom don’t want their hard-earned money being used by the federal government to subsidize abortion — President Obama should scrap the current health-care bill, and work in a bipartisan way for true reforms.

# RE: Boehner Slams Obama and Democrats on Abortion and Health Care

Mr. Boehner, there is no doubt abortion is a horror, however what does one do in this nation with a 12 or 13 year old that has conceived through rape or abortion? If this were France, the girl would be given healthcare, food and housing for herself and her child. In addition she would be able if she so wished to obtain schooling to better herself. That type of care is a far cry from the the help the girl could expect to receive in this nation. The past leaders in your party Mr. Boehner have been the greatest detriment to providing help in healthcare situations. It's a horrible thing to say, but sometimes abortion may be the lesser of the evils. A terrible indictment for the USA.

In response to Joelang60

I seriously doubt that the babys that are killed in abortion would agree that it is the lesser of two evils. I also doubt that they would want you or I making that decision for them. I was born dead but God in His mercy and grace revived me. I have had CP and many struggles but I have had a full and wonderful life, with two daughters, five granddaughters, and a great grandson. I am so glad that someone didn't decide for me, and them that life would be too hard and for me to die would be the lesser of two evils.
God in His word makes it clear that we are to choose life. Death is an enemy.
I agree that young girls and women in general who find themselves in an unwanted pregnancy, should be helped in any way possible. I also think that should be done freely by Christians if at all possible. I think some secters of the church in general has been sadly lacking in the area of speaking out against abortion and caring for those in need.

In response to Gail Kirtz: thank you for your response and believe me it's gratifying to hear a story like yours. If the assistance that you were given were available to every child (fetus) and every woman were to be afforded the necessary assistance I would also take a very strong anti-abortion position. Unfortunately however that is not the case in this nation. Yes, help should be given by not only Christians, but by every race, color and creed, but this has not proven to be the case. Too many times the poor children born in that unfortunate circumstance wind up horribly abused. It is because of the abuse to the child that I made the statement the lesser of two evils. Please forgive my delay in responding Ms. Kirtz, I only today had seen your very wonderful article. Thanks for responding to my article.

do you think your a good person?Take a look at the commandments and then ask yourself am I guilty or innocent?
All of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
None of us will be pardoned on the day of judgement without having repented of our sins and accepted the grace of God in Jesus Christ.
How do we know we need His grace?the law of God is what shows us our sinfulness.
How many of us have lied, cheated and murdered or lusted in our hearts. Can anyone say that they are truly innocent of these crimes?Abortion is murder yes but how many of us have hated others the Bible says that murder too!He who has no sin cast the first stone.
We cannot cast it but the law of God can.
God's standards are greater than mans.If the law here on earth can throw us into jail for civil disobedience just think what the law of God which judges motives and intents of the heart can convict us of.We cannot truly see His grace until we see our sin.Jesus paid for our crimes with His life.
