Let’s just be honest here. This CIA Memos story has the potential to be an absolute train wreck for the Obama administration. If former Bush administration officials are investigated and brought before Congress then it’s a triple whammy for the President.
First of all, it would fly in the face of his looking “forward not back” theory. Secondly, it could seriously hinder any effort to get Congressional Republicans on board his signature domestic legislative efforts. And finally, it drudges up a debate that Obama would probably rather not engage in which is whether Obama is really making the nation safer by releasing the memos and more broadly it gives his critics the chance to pound him on the national security issue.
