The Brody File is heading back to the USA this weekend. I hope you’ve enjoyed our coverage from London and France.
So far the European version of President Obama is the same one as in America. He has said things over here that he has echoed at home too. I think what we are seeing right now is the honeymoon phase. My colleague traveling with me, Tyler James called it the “Beauty Pageant” stage and he’s dead on. Look, the President is well liked right now and there is a sentiment over here that he’s a major upgrade over President Bush so he’s going to be receiving good will. The test will be when the going gets tough. What happens if the Russians don’t play nice with SMART Treaty talks? Will Obama get tough? Will the relationship break down? What happens if in a year the economy is worse? Will Obama be more aggressive pushing for fiscal stimulus and in essence tell Germany and France to take a hike? My point is simply that all of the good impressions on Obama’s first venture to Europe as President should be expected. The next full trip will bear watching and with it increased scrutiny.
