Video: Obama in April 2008: I want to “expand the diversity of voices in media”

While a spokesman for President Obama says he doesn’t want to bring back the Fairness Doctrine, candidate Obama’s words back in April may give some of his critics pause. Heck, maybe even angst. Heck, maybe even a reach for the Rolaids.

The Brody File brings you a video clip that hasn’t received much attention at all. This is from a campaign stop back in April of 2008. The shorter version is here. The slightly longer version is here. Transcription is below.

"I’m committed to having the FCC review what our current policies are in terms of media diversification and part of what I want to do is to expand the diversity of voices in media or have policies that encourage that, taking into account that the nature of our media itself is changing so rapidly that the most important thing that we can probably do is to preserve the diversity that's emerging through the internet."

Folks, the debate over the Fairness Doctrine will not be played out in Congress as much as it will be played out at the FCC. Conservatives are standing watch next to the “back door’ if you will, waiting for staffers from the Obama administration to show up with creative ‘diversity” language that could make its way through the FCC. Is it paranoia or reality? We’ll soon find out.

By the way, President Obama has picked his new FCC Commissioner. His name is Julius Genachowski. You think he’ll be under the microscope a little bit? Read more about his nomination here.
