House Minority Leader John Boehner is calling for “spending sanity” in Washington. He just released a web video detailing his bewilderment at the Democrats plan for an omnibus spending bill. Watch it here and read part of his comments below:

“We need some spending sanity here in Washington.  You know, we just passed this $800 billion so-called stimulus bill and now we’re about to pass a $410 billion omnibus appropriations bill because we didn’t finish our work last year.  There are nine appropriations bills that [Democrats] are going to wrap together that are $30 billion over budget in a bill that contains 9,000 earmarks.  This is absolutely crazy.”

Democrats will say it’s somewhat comical to watch Republicans complain about earmarks and spending when they’ve been guilty of it as well under the Bush years. There’s no doubt the GOP has a credibility issue here. Having said that, it is now the Democratic Leadership under the legislative microscope. President Obama is talking tough on earmarks and transparency but can he reign in his own party?
