Michael Steele tells The Brody File that President Bush should have called Alaska Senator Ted Stevens into The White House and pressured him to resign. Because he didn’t, Steele tells The Brody File that the GOP ended up losing that Senate seat to the Democratic Party.
Watch his full answer from The Brody File interview above. A partial transcription is below:
“Senator Stevens should have been brought to The White House and been told to resign and give the Governor a chance to appoint a Republican to that seat; herself or someone else and now look where we are. Because of arrogance and ignorance we’ve lost the seat. The arrogance of power within our own rank and file needs to get addressed and we need to assert party discipline to make sure that we are not killing our own goose if you will that’s trying to lay a golden egg for us.”
Brody: Where does the buck stop on that one?
Steele: The President of the United States calls him in. He’s the head of the party. Call him in. Sit him down. What? Do you think that’s above his pay grade? Absolutely not. Sit him down and say ‘Excuse me, Senator we love you man, we like everything you did for Alaska but your time has come and it has gone and we need to preserve this seat for the GOP.’ In this environment, in this climate? We are the party that has railed against corruption and we’re endorsing this craziness? C’mon. It’s silly.”
So Michael Steele, tell us how you really feel!
