Voter's Guide for Serious Christians, Catholics

Robin Mazyck here with a guest blog for The Brody File.

David and I spent the weekend in Las Vegas covering the election and how things are playing in this crucial swing state.

What we found is that both campaigns are pulling out all the punches in the final leg of the race.

We came out here to cover a rally that Senator Obama held Saturday. He has made about 20 trips to Nevada.

Meanwhile, the McCain Campaign is handing out flyers in Las Vegas to give guidance to voters in this critical election. The flyers are titled Voter's Guide for Serious Christians and Voter's Guide for Serious Catholics. The flyers have been printed in both English and Spanish and are the brainchild of Christian Answers Action and Catholic Answers Action

The purpose of the flyer is to help believers "cast your vote in an informed manner consistent with Christian moral teaching. It helps you avoid choosing candidates who endorse polices that cannot be reconciled with moral norms that used to be held by all Christians."

The Voter's Guide for Serious Catholics references the Catechism of the Catholic Church and other documents.

Both flyers, however, state that "nothing in this voter's guide should be construed as an endorsement of any particular candidate or political party."  And they focus on "the five non-negotiable issues": abortion, euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, human cloning, and homosexual marriage.

Regarding these points, the flyer states "these five current issues concern actions that are intrinsically evil and must never be promoted by the law… Intrinsically evil actions are those which fundamentally conflict with God's law and can never be deliberately performed under any circumstances."

The flyer goes on to tell voters how not to vote:

1. Do not just vote based on your political party affiliation, your earlier voting habits, or your family's voting tradition.

2. Do not cast your voted candidates' appearance, personality or "media savvy."

3. Do not vote for candidates simply because they declare themselves to be Christian.

4. Do not choose among candidates based on "What's in it for me?"

5. Do not vote for candidates who are right on lesser issues but who will vote wrongly on key moral issues.

The "Voter's Guide" also has some advice on what to do if there is no "acceptable" candidate.

It advises "in such a case you may vote for the candidate who takes the fewest such positions or who seems least likely to be able to advance immoral legislation or you may choose to vote for no one."
