Is it Too Late for McCain?

John McCain and his campaign are trying to do everything they can to paint Barack Obama as a lefty liberal who lacks the character, judgement and experience to be President of the United States. As a matter of fact, The Brody File has stumbled upon the McCain strategy plan layed out in diagram form. Click here to see it.

Folks, the kitchen sink is flying. And who knows? It may work. The McCain camp believes they have quite a bit of A-list material. But they have a problem.

Election Day is just a few weeks away and the campaign is basically trying to somehow shift the focus away from the economy to a referendum on Obama. The problem for them is that since Obama had a protracted primary battle with Hillary Clinton, he has had time to really craft his image and the way people view him. The branding of Obama took place early and often. He's about change, hope and a new kind of politics right? That line will make the McCain campaign and his supporters head to the barf bag but you know what? The brand has already been created and the train seems to have left the station.

I'm not saying McCain's strategy of, "Who's the real Obama?" won't work. But I think we can all agree that it won't be easy.

Look, Jeremiah Wright damaged Obama because they had a deep personal relationship and people understood that. They figured Obama was receiving spiritual advice from Wright and they were right. With Ayers and Rezco, the ties are not as deep no matter how you slice it. I mean let's think about this for a moment. A deep and lasting friendship with Ayers would be incredibly damaging but there's no indictaion that the two are close. Yes you can make the case that he shouldn't even be hanging in the same company with an unrepented terrorist but for the story to really get traction it seems that there would need to be some proof that the two have a lasting and important friendship. Without that link, it's probably hard to get people thinking of Ayers like Jeremiah Wright. Plus, this Ayers story doesn't have the Youtube clip power behind it. It probably will not have the same impact
