Will Evangelicals help put McCain over the top or sit on their hands?
Charlie Black, one of John McCain's top advisors addressed that with me when I sat down with him Thursday night in Milwaukee, WI. Read below Watch above.
He has met with a lot of evangelical leaders and groups and continues to reach out to them. I think a lot of the leadership of the very diverse evangelical organizations is now fully supporting him, but I'll tell you what one leader in the evangelical community told me several weeks ago. He said the two biggest issues are winning the war on terror -- the war against radical Islamic extremism and judges - the appointment of conservative judges. Guess what? Those are two signature issues of John McCain and issues he's with them on.
I think he says to evangelicals and other conservatives, I might not be with you on every single issue, but when he tells them something - they can believe it. So when he says "I'm pro-life," they know they can take that to the bank. When he says "he'll support the sanctity of marriage between one man and one woman and do anything in his power to protect it," they can take that to the bank, the judges. I believe he'll keep working and nurturing his support there, but interestingly enough in polls right now with the rank and file voters, he's really doing very well with evangelicals and conservatives.
