Evangelical Leader's Advice to John McCain

The Brody File spoke to Dr. Richard Land, one of the major Evangelical leaders in the country. He is the President of The Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission and represents millions of Southern Baptists across this country.

John McCain does not see eye to eye with the majority of Evangelicals on the need for a federal marriage amendment. McCain also takes some flack for his support of federally funded embryonic stem cell research.

Richard Land has some advice:

If I were Senator McCain, I would try to set up a meeting or a series of meetings with a cross section of evangelical and conservative values voters leaders to discuss their concerns about same sex marriage, about their concerns that the federal judiciary might strike down the Defense of Marriage Act and to listen to their concerns about embryonic stem cell research and really listen and engage in a dialogue to have a better understanding of their positions which might result in some movement on their part and his part. Dialogue, respectful, constructive dialogue never hurts.

And what if Land was advising McCain on campaign strategy? Here are some tips from Land:

He needs to focus on his conservative bona fides, his very reliable pro-life voting record, and his very reliable national security voting record. He needs to make it clear that where he finds himself in disagreement with conservatives he is respectful of the fact of the credible position which he respects even if he doesn't agree with it.

And that he understands that border security must come first in any attempt at immigration reform. And the judges, the judges, the judges at virtually every campaign stop where he should make clear Justice Roberts and Associate Justice Alito are exactly the kind of judges I will nominate to the federal judiciary and the Supreme Court if I am given the privilege of being your president.
