Obama’s Nobel: The Last Thing He Needed

When I saw that President Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize, my reaction was similar to that of two White House aides. When they heard the news, the aides asked a reporter if it was an April Fools Day gag.

In order to win, Obama had to be nominated for the award before February 1, after just 11 days in office. And he was bestowed the award after a tough week in which the media questioned, criticized and even mocked him for not accomplishing anything, so far.

A London Times columnist calls it an “absurd decision.”  Even a lowly day laborer on the streets of Baghdad told Reuters that Obama “doesn't deserve this prize. All these problems -- Iraq, Afghanistan -- have not been solved ... man of 'change' hasn't changed anything yet."

Time Magazine’s Mark Halperin, no flaming conservative, told MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough this morning that “not since Marisa Tomei won her best supporting actress award (for "My Counsin Vinny," has someone been less deserving of an award)”. Halperin added, between laughing, that “the best thing you can say about this is, it’s premature.”

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Obama for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples." This is code for Obama’s efforts to make America more like Europe. European elites don’t like traditional American values and habits like American exceptionalism, driving SUV’s, praying, protecting the unborn, or using our military to actually fight.  And European elites are keen on promoting politicians who seem really smart and talk great and don’t actually accomplish a lot, except for making people more dependent on big government. Sounds familiar.

The president would have been better served by refusing this medal, which is going to feel heavier and heavier as the criticism of his administration grows.

Dale, is this an example of "sour grapes" because no neocon has won the award? I can think of one appropriate remark and it is taken from the bible "Truly a prophet is without honor in his own country and amongst his own kin". If you recall, there were a great many jews who hated Jesus Christ in spite of all of his works. You make it sound as if President Obama has accomplished nothing Dale, even an avowed neocon would have to recognize some progress with regard more confidence in the global community with respect to the economy. All in all Dale I think you would have to admit this nation and the global economy is one hell of a lot better off than at this time a year ago!

I hardly would call it "sour grapes" to say it was premature for Barack Obama to receive the Nobel. Even the committee admitted it was given in the "hope" that he would achieve his goals.

Not to mention, to quote scripture to reference Barack Obama as some sort of prophet...and certainly to compare him to Jesus...is stretching things. He is not the savior of America, the white house is inflating the stimulus's effects, especially the amount of jobs created.

After his term is completed and he's accomplished something other than being elected then by all means give the man the prize. Until then it was premature and certainly motivated by politics.

Written like a true neocon Kristine. President Obama may not be the savior of America, but in the first year of his presidency his actions certainly reversed the financial direction in which his vacuous predecessors had steered it. The global economy is certinly reacting a whole lot more positively to this nation than it did in the September 2008 period. with regard employment, even the most novice student of economics is aware that the last thing to get fixed in an economic crisis of this proportion is employment.
