This week I asked perhaps the most high profile opponent of Islam in the world why Christians should support him. Dutch Parliament member Geert Wilders faces a hate crimes charge in the Netherlands for calling Islam a fascist ideology.
I asked him this for a couple reasons. Wilders, an atheist, has expressed astonishment that more Dutch Christian politicians don't support and agree with him, since he claims to defend Christian civilization (although I think what he wants to preserve is more precisely called post-Christian civilization; one sprinkled liberally with humanism, including gay rights and abortion rights).
And I asked the question because I know from reading my email that there is discomfort among many Christians toward Wilders, if not outright rejection of him because of his approach. His is certainly not a loving approach toward Islam, and tends to erect barricades rather than tear them down. But then there are many Christians who say barricades against Islam are urgently needed. We could go round and round...
So, anyway, I asked him why Christians should support him. Here is his response, edited only for clarity.
