You'd think that this Peggy Noonan piece from the Wall Street Journal ought to be pretty effective in spreading fear and panic over the Election Day debacle that could lie ahead for Republicans….except that the GOP leadership seems to have numbed itself up with denial. Noonan spoke with Republican Congressman Tom Davis of Virginia, who told her the Republican Party is "an airplane flying right into a mountain." Davis wrote in a 20-page memo to the Republican leadership that the party "fail(s) to understand the deep seated antipathy toward the president, the war, gas prices, the economy, foreclosures…" Noonan, who was a special assistant to Ronald Reagan, writes that "Mr. Bush has squandered the hard-built paternity of 40 years. But so has the party, and so have its leaders."
It's gloomy stuff.
