Prayer and Legal Appeal for Pakistani Death Sentence Woman

Asia Bibi (pronounced AH-sya), the Pakistani Christian accused of committing blasphemy against the Islamic prophet Mohammed has appealed her death sentence to the Lahore High Court.

CBN News has obtained a copy of the documents.

Her appeal alleges that the trial court "misread and mis-assessed the evidence" and the judgement had been passed "in an arbitrary manner, without going through the deeper appreciation of the merits of the case."

The appeal further states that the prosecution "failed to prove the case against her beyond a shadow of a doubt" and evidence is "inconsistent, un-corroborative and full of material discrepancies."

On Nov. 8, a lower court ordered Asia be put to death and it imposed a fine against her of 100,000 rupees (nearly $1,200)--more than two times her annual salary.

Pope Benedict XVI has also weighed in on the case.

He said, "especially today I express my spiritual closeness to Mrs. Asia Bibi and her family, while I ask for full freedom to be restored to her, as soon as possible."

The Pope added "I also pray for those who find themselves in similar situations, that their human dignity and their fundamental rights be fully respected."

And you may want to view this video--just in from the Voice of the Martyrs. It begins with Asia Bibi's husband—Ashiq Masih walking into the court building. Once inside, we see Asia's attorney preparing the appeal documents. Then we see Asia's husband Ashiq making a video appeal to Christians worldwide.
