Health Anxiety and Your Family

So I am reading the morning paper, enjoying my coffee, when I come across a small article tucked in the health and wellness section of the Wall Street Journal. According to research in a British journal, calcium supplements, typically used to prevent osteoporosis, now appear to increase the risk for heart attack. Great!

Bikini Waxes for Eight Year Olds... Really?

When The New York Post reported that 14-year-old Glynis Coyne has been getting her legs waxed since she was 8 years old, I just gasped. Apparently, I am not up on the latest trend – hair removal for preadolescent girls?! Instead of a trip to the candy store, a growing number of moms choose spa visits. The menu includes leg and bikini waxing and eyebrow shaping.

Helping Children Cope with Violence

My heart went out to four-year-old Victoria as she jumped off the bleachers and bounded over to me. We were at her brother's baseball game and her daddy had just left for the war in Afghanistan. He's a Navy ER physician sent to the front line with Marine gunners. As I talked and prayed with her mom, Victoria smiled, "My daddy left, but he is coming back to me."
