Counteracting Lady GaGa’s Influence

My 16-year-old daughter called me to the computer last night to watch something she saw online. It was Lady GaGa’s new nine and a half minute music video, “Telephone”, with Beyonce. The video skyrocketed to No. 1 on Billboard. My daughter was so disturbed by the video that she needed to talk about it. She couldn’t understand how Lady GaGa was allowed to prance around almost completely naked and be so disgusting. I watched the video. It was porn. I was shocked at the nudity and raunchiness, and am glad that my daughter was too! In a culture with high rates of pornography addiction, violence, eating disorders, depression, and anxiety, these videos only contribute to those problems.

It is getting increasingly more difficult to shield our teens from the onslaught of pornography and violence that characterize many music videos. The popularity of artists like Lady GaGa is mainstream. Just go into your youth group, ask the kids who sings “Poker Face” or “Just Dance”. They know and can sing you the lyrics. (I’ve done this exercise at many youth groups.)

Youth groups need to address this trend of nudity, violence, and sexual objectification that is becoming the norm of teen viewing. Parents can’t fight this battle alone. We need the church to wake up to the onslaught of images that are assaulting our kids and desensitizing them to the things of God. Together, we must address how pop culture influences our teens. The conversation must be on-going and relevant.

Parents, get online and take a look at the top 10 music videos. Spend a few hours watching MTV.  Listen to lyrics of songs on iTunes and watch the movies your kids are renting. It will drive you to intercession and wake you up to the spiritual battle our teens face. Start discussing media in your family and talk about the impact of passively viewing sexual and violent media. Work with your teens to make godly choices and to resist temptation. And if you are struggling yourself, get help!

Ask your youth group leaders to discuss media, lyrics and how much is too much. A number of months ago, I worked with a youth group and dissected the lyrics to Katie Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” song. The teens knew all the words but had not considered the message (same sex experimentation) in terms of how it might influence their thinking and Christian walk. It was a productive conversation. The church needs to work with families in this area and be another voice to reinforce Christian values and help teens question their exposure to certain media.

While the battle seems overwhelming, our best defense is prayer. God is on our side. Pray, talk and be in the lives of your teens. They need all the help they can get.

Are you and/or your teen’s youth group discussing pop culture, especially music?

I've seen the videos and heard alot of the music. When the lyrics are to harsh,I change the station.of course, the kids get up set,I tell them its my car or radio and we'll listen to what is appropriate.I'm trying to make a stand at home although I can't control what the kids at school are subjecting my child to.I'm also teaching her that she has a choice to listen or walk away. She is learning and attending church on regular basis. We both just got Baptised in our church and becoming close again.

I think parents need to be conscious of how they are providing guidance and protection. We must lead by humble example, admitting our own mistakes and explaining our actions (which should be out of love, because of the TRUE REALITY of what is to come and what is at stake, which Satan, the father of lies, is so good at hiding in our world of illusions). If the kids see us as hypocrites it will most likely do no good (and possibly even do damage) for us to make commands. I just heard Adrian Rogers on AFR the other day (7 p.m. CST) say something like this: "Rules without relationship lead to rebellion". We must first begin with ourselves, realizing that we are spiritually poor (if not bankrupt; Isaiah 6:5, Matthew 5:3, Luke 18:13-14). I am currently getting to participate in "The Truth Project", a wake up call to and teaching for Christians of all capable ages to realize the Truth and reject the lies that have taken US captive. I highly recommend seeking one out in your area!

I could not stand to it. After 2 mins and skipping many parts I closed the website. I am not a mother yet, but I was a teenager, sometimes I rebelled against my parents by listening rock music. I suggest also to pastors and youth ministers to watch out what kind of entertainment they are putting in front of the kids. One time I was invited to go to a youth lock-in where, for my surprise, sadly, the pastor had Beyonce Karaoke. Probably she is not like Lady Gaga but, still is not a good influence. All these secular singers sing about sex, crazy love, confusion, God is not mentioned there. Plus the attire they use is not the proper for modesty. Later that night some kids were playing guitar with some rock videos, again for my surprise they were playing a song from Heroes del Silencio. They did not understand the words, but I did, because this was my iconic group. And the lyrics of their songs are not good. I really felt sad for this situation. May God help us!

Don't let Beyonce off the hook! The music industry wants to pass Beyonce off as this classy woman whom everyone should want their daughter to be like, and then slip the suggestive stuff by. Lady Ga Ga is just raunchy in your face, while Beyonce is subtle porn. Either way, they should both be ashamed of themselves!

As a Christian musician,I feel we need to pray for entertainers. Many make millions and appear to think they are not accountable to anyone. Jay-Z constantly makes music that counteracts God's power. For example, his song "Empire State of mind', clearly states "And Jesus can’t save you
life starts when the church ends" which is false. He also has a song where he states to kill and murder Jesus. So if we really want to look at Beyonce, shouldn't we ask ourselves why she married someone who makes negative statements about our God who is almighty, all powerful, and whom she use to claim she served? The Bible mentions how we can gain the whole world but lose our souls. In her pictures, she is in the middle of images of what appear to be some type of witch craft symbols and goats. Should the church accept money she gives that comes from anti-Christ like behavior? Freshwater and saltwater don't mix. Their video is gross and they need prayer. Is anyone available to pray for their salvation?

You know this is a very interesting segment. It was mentioned to me from my son who is only ten years old. That Lady Gaga is strange. He used those exact terms. I had no idea who she was and he brung it to my attention. My mother three days later without knowing our conversation stated she just sits there with a blank expression. Thru further investigation studying the symbology that she portrays. Truly she and others are very much aware of what they portray. This video ended up being a topic at the dinner table. You know it is written that we should not judge however there is a difference between judging and acknowledging what is being portrayed and i for one know that i am responsible for teaching my children the truth of Christ versus the deception of illuminati. There comes a time where it is mandatory to stand up with the truth and what is right. I pray that these people find salvation.

I guess this really is a wake up call for me. My daughter's into all kinds of secular music. I haven't done a very good job raising her. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I forced myself to watch this video. God has given me a burden for these people Hollywood etc. My heart feels very sad for them because they are blind and they think they are rich, but they are pitiful naked and poor actually. I challenge all of us to pray for Lady Gaga and Hollywood for that matter. I still believe there are 10 righteous people there. Either way God loves them all and desires for all to come to repentance but they have a freewill. Thank the Lord for the free will. He doesn't force us to serve Him. They will come to Him because of the love we show to them. Please pray rather than judge. We are all sinners saved by grace and I am those sinners. Praise God for His grace!!!

# RE: Counteracting Lady GaGa’s Influence

I come from Seychelles, married with two boys both under the age of 10. Here we have a very diverse culture, which makes it even more easier for our teens to get influence, and when I read these comments above it is the same everywhere, Christians really need to be more pro-active towards our youths of today, be more involve in the things that they interested in.
It is true that prayer is the only next solution. Our children is growing up in an upside world. These kind of video clips had been around for a while and nobody was even making it an issue.Parents, not because these things are on TV and come from professionals means they are OK and right.
I thank GOD for Dr. Linda for starting these comments.

I'm glad to hear that I"m not the only one who finds what she promotes disturbing. Not only does she promote a lot of bad morals, but I have also read that she said that she's tortured, but she likes it. I am actually really shocked that she seems to talk about the stress & health problems she has as though she's willing to sacrifice her physical and mental health just for her career. We definitely need to pray for her and for anyone who looks up to her.

Oh my dear, dear Christians. Why am I not surprised that you'd write such drivel as you are. If it's not what conforms to your ideas of society, then clearly it must be the DEVIL. I think the only people who need praying are you fine men and women because you're the ones not following God's word.
As for Dr. Linda, you should be ashamed of yourself for providing such a one sided view. You are an educated woman with a Ph.D in Psychology and are also part of Pediatrics, meaning you should be giving both sides not jut what you believe, it is your duty as an educator and a doctor of Psychology. The fact that you are going with such a one-sided view makes me think you should have your degree revoked.
I personally think Gaga has revolutionized the music industry and I would let my children listen to it (once they've grown a certain age as some words I clearly wouldn't let a 5 year old hear) because of how revolutionary the songs are.
That's my two cents.

hey listen here u people (haters), You all should be very ashamed with yourselves. she is not influencing pornography. it is simply her way to express herself. if you rlly think about it; ever since lady gaga has became a famous singer, she influences the LGBT community in America and in other countries, to express themselves. you all make her seem like she is nothing and deserves hatred. but she does not. if you have such a big problem with it then dont listen to her music. but if you really think about it she is saving lives, helping more people feel comfortable with their flaws, and helping with the worlds LGBT community feel excepted. so stop your hating and grow up. seriously. <GABEMCCLAINX>

# RE: Counteracting Lady GaGa’s Influence

I am not a hater. I am a mom, and a sinner saved by Grace, just like Dr. Linda. Clearly the defenders of the music & videos are not viewing this article from a Biblical view point, but a worldly one. Isn't that exactly what the "artists" making millions off the sale and marketing of their music are counting on? They don't care about the souls of our kids. Dr. Linda does. They care about making money-period. Their God is their ego and their wallet at the expense of our kids.Satan will use anything & anybody he can to disrupt our homes. We do need to pray for all souls. I pray Lady GaGa would come to know her talent is a gift from God and start to use her influence to help people follow Christ's call, not her own ideas that directly oppose His teachings. Some of these letters are so sad. Jesus loves Lady GaGa and He died for her too. That is hard for me, as a parent, to remember when I'm heartbroken over my teen wanting to listen to this kind of music. The pull is scary. Pray & speak out
