Views of the Yangtze River

China's waterways don't really have the best reputation these days, but when these images of the Yangtze River were taken in 1946 by Dmitri Kessel, it's easier to understand why this river is sometimes referred to as the Golden Waterway. The Three Gorges Dam was still in its initial phase, and at the time Nanjing, one of the most prominent cities along the river, was China's capital.

While times have changed, these images serve as a powerful reminder of the river's recent history.
