In case you’ve never read any of Lila’s question/answer books, let me tell you that they are biblically based, well-written, informative, and interesting. Her latest were specifically created for graduates, mothers, and fathers. Although the books are nothing fancy to look at (paperback, simple covers, small, etc.), you will find that they are packed with solid, helpful information, making them the perfect gift.

Summer Reading: More Books for Your Buck

Summertime is here, and hopefully that means more time for leisure activities…like reading of course! But if you’re anything like me you can whip through a paperback in two or three days, which means reading can become an expensive habit. The good news is that many major publishers have gone the extra mile to give readers a wide variety of inexpensive books this summer.

WaterBrook Multnomah

Fiction lovers don’t need to budget to travel this summer with WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group’s eight full-length, historical novels by beloved Christian authors such as Lisa Tawn Bergren and Jane Kirkpatrick. At only $6.99 each, these well-read “get-aways” provide quality enjoyment at a price any reader can afford. Novels include:

    -- The Captain’s Bride

Facing Our Uncertain Future

A Conversation with Author Jim Fletcher

Jim Fletcher admits to having a fascination when it comes to end of the world. Will it come in a cataclysm, in an inferno? Will it come at all? Is Al Gore right...will we melt like slumbering snowmen or are we truly running to a place of bliss?

Fletcher has spent much of his adult life in search of the truth about the Bible, biblical prophecy, and in his latest book, It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine), he clearly demonstrates just how relevant (and true) the Bible really is, showing how…

Despite the mockery of the Bible today, we are in fact living in the last days of world history, as outlined in the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures.

God has plainly revealed Himself in the Bible.

You can satisfy that human longing to know who is "out there" and what is happening in our world today.

With humor and a keen eye for pop culture, Fletcher walks you through the opinions of people from the famous to the obscure, and then demonstrates conclusively that the Bible's predictions are true...and there's nothing to be afraid of.

What was your vision for writing this book?

I felt there was no bridge between the classic Bible prophecy books and, say, the presentations from authors like Rob Bell and Donald Miller. I wondered what it would be like to jam very conservative theology into an edgy package. With this approach, I thought there was a chance to reach newer and broader audiences.

With the rise in popularity of books like The Left Behind Series in both the Christian and general market, do you think that they are foretelling the nearness of the end of the world?

I’m certain we’re approaching the end of the world, but it has nothing to do with those books. It has to do with the fact that this theme — this warning — is ubiquitous in Scripture.

In End Times theology, Israel plays an important role. What exactly is that role, and what in your opinion is the reason that programs such as the “Roadmap to Peace” have not been successful?

Bless you for asking; this is my favorite subject. In the book, I devote a great deal of time to explaining the sensational signals being sent that Israel is primary in God’s plans for the end. God intends to use a reborn Israel as His judgment for the nations who have opposed His direction. It’s comical to me that it’s comical to Bible prophecy critics that Israel is anything but a coincidence of history. This is patently false, demonstrably false. Read Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel; study the history of the founding of the state of Israel and her subsequent history, then tell me they are a coincidence.

The “Roadmap” is another matter. Although we know from Scripture that God gave the land in question to the Jews forever, the primary reason today that all the various peace initiatives have been disasters is because the Arab states are radicalized against the lone Jewish state in the region. In a secular world devoid of Islam, the “Roadmap” is a perfectly fine idea. In the real world, it is madness on a colossal scale.

In our modern world, a great deal of fear about the future exists. As Christians, what should the response be when facing uncertainty?

As I point out in [It's the End of the World as We Know It], there is massive empirical evidence — for those who need it — that Bible prophecy is true in total. Logically, then, if that is true, then God’s “other” promises are also true. He has promised not to forsake us or forget us. He has also said quite clearly that He intends to end things the way He sees fit. I believe Him.

Today, the concept of human secularism has been become very popular in America’s educational institutions. Do you think that this is one of the precursors to Armageddon?

Spot-on. Peter, John, Jesus, and Paul predicted in the New Testament that apostasy would combine with humanism to flex its muscles in the last days. Read II Peter 3. It is quite ironic that the haters/skeptics of Bible prophecy fulfill the very prophecy they deny.

Girl Perfect: The Real Life of a Runway Model

Girl Perfect

Jennifer Strickland

Excel Books, September 2008

ISBN: 978-1599793436, 194 pages

A CONVERSATION WITH JENNIFER STRICKLAND

Jennifer Strickland is a former model, a published author, a graduate with a master's degree in writing and literature, a wife and mother. I spoke to her recently about her groundbreaking book, Girl Perfect, and found her to be passionate, kind, intelligent, and purposeful.

Jennifer, how did you first enter the modeling industry?

My mother got me involved when I was eight years old. I wasn’t interested in ballet or sports, and a local modeling school was giving a “Cinderella class.” It seemed like a great fit for me at the time. It helped me deal with my height, stand up straight, and gain some poise.

How did your parents feel about you becoming a model?

My parents were very supportive of me pursuing my dreams. They wanted to give me every possible chance to succeed in anything I wanted to do. Later on, while living in Europe from the age of 17 to 23, I hid a lot of things from them, mostly because I didn’t want to shatter their image of me and of the “exciting life” of a professional model. I wanted them to be proud of me and I didn’t want them to know what life was like behind the scenes, because then they wouldn’t have supported it. I wanted the freedom to travel as a young woman on my own and to make money.

Can you give me some examples of ways that being in the modeling industry hurt you as a young girl?

It really hurt my sense of self worth, teaching me that the only important thing was what I looked like. I was a “thing,” a mannequin, a product to be bought and sold. It taught me that my value was based on my outward appearance.

What turned your life around?

After doing the Armani shows in Milan, I hit bottom as a result of an eating disorder, drug use, and loneliness. I couldn’t maintain the façade anymore. Like many of the other models, I was just too tender of a person to be considered a “thing.” I became ill and lost my “good looks,” which caused me to experience even more rejection.

Some people reached out to me in Munich, sharing the Gospel with me, taking me to church, and even giving me a Bible. As I read the Word, my eyes were opened to the fact that there was more to life than modeling, and all that involved, and that there could be hope and a future for me.

Tell me about the title of the book, Girl Perfect. What does that mean?

The search for “perfect” is something we all want and are taught can be found. According to the fairy tales of the world, we are told that we can find the perfect love, the perfect dream, the perfect future … and the world tells us we need to have the perfect body, the perfect look, the perfect success story.

Girl Perfect is about every girl in search of perfect, in search of something that will fill the longings of our hearts. I feel compelled to tell girls and women that what they see in the magazines is a complete façade, and that just because a girl looks perfect in the picture it says nothing about the fulfillment she has in her personal life. Pictures can be very deceiving, and I don’t want yet another generation of young women comparing themselves to the women found in magazines and feeling “less-than.” I’m desperate for them to know about the reality of the struggles of models’ lives, and to realize that the world’s perception of “perfect beauty” is an illusion.

In Chapter 1, you talk about guys and sexuality. What do you think the world is teaching girls about this?

The world is telling girls and young women that their sexuality is their source of power and worth. Affirmation is the longing to be approved of and validated. The world teaches girls that their bodies and sexuality are the source by which they will receive approval and validation. But the truth is, God validates us by one thing: the cross. He made us, He loves us; we are His creations and His daughters. But even further, He says our bodies are His temples where He desires for His spirit to dwell and reign. Christ on the cross is the perfect picture of His love for us — it is our source of affirmation.

When our affirmation comes directly from who we are in God’s eyes and how valuable and special we are to Him, we do not need to use our sexuality as a way to get that affirmation. We become so much more secure in who we are and how precious our sexuality and bodies are.

How have you been able to use your experiences to enrich other girls’ and women’s lives?

I’ve been getting letters from girls all over the world about the impact the book has had on their lives, so that is a huge blessing. I also speak at women’s and girls’ events across the country, sharing my story and teaching them what God sees as real, lasting beauty. I love sharing the biblical picture of beauty and helping women base their identity and self-worth on who they are in God’s eyes alone.

Jennifer Strickland

Excel Books, September 2008

ISBN: 978-1599793436, 194 pages

At the age of eight, Jennifer Strickland entered the world of modeling, beginning a journey that took her to the runways of Milan. On the outside, she seemed to have it all--walking the runway for Giorgio Armani, commercials for companies from Oil of Olay to Mercedes Benz, worldwide attention, and all the glamour that comes with the fashion industry. But she quickly discovered that this world is not all glitter and gold...

Girl Perfect is the haunting story of Jennifer's journey from fashion to faith. Within these pages you will get an inside look at the industry--and you will find a girl who struggled just as you do. The principles of true beauty she shares will shatter the illusion that beauty and success satisfy, leading you to the powerful, lasting knowledge of who you are in God's sight: his beloved daughter, handcrafted to reflect His glory to the world.

Girl Perfect is a perfect 10 in my book. Jennifer Strickland has written one of the best books I’ve read in years, and I feel compelled to shout from the rooftops that women everywhere should read it. It’s more than just beautifully written and expertly arranged—it’s compelling, heartbreaking, and undeniably authentic. Strickland weaves the story of her years as a runway model with biblical teaching in a way that’s both appealing and meaningful. Although I truly enjoyed each and every chapter of Girl Perfect, the last half of the book is especially gripping. Even though I already knew the end of the story (God’s salvation and healing for Jennifer) I so enjoyed reading about the amazing and supernatural ways in which God revealed Himself to her.

On a personal note, my office bookshelves are bursting with stacks of books to read, review, and eventually pass on. Girl Perfect, however, will not be passed on. It’s made the great leap from my office bookshelf to my living room bookshelf. I can’t part with it. It’s just too darn interesting and uplifting to pass on. Also, I have a fourteen year old daughter who I know will greatly enjoy this book when she’s a bit older. (Some of Strickland’s stories are a bit edgy for early teen girls in my opinion.)

Elaine: You ever notice how happy people are when they finally get a table? They feel so special because they’ve been chosen. It's enough to make you sick!
Jerry: Boy. You are really hungry.
- "The Chinese Restaurant Episode," Seinfeld

I know why you like to eat in restaurants. Half of the struggle of cooking dinner is coming up with a plan to feed the two of you (made even more complex if you’re feeding additional, and sometimes picky, members of the family) then shopping for it, cooking it, and possibly, occasionally, not even being thanked for it. A trip to the Olive Garden would be so much easier.

But why does your husband like to go out to eat so much?

I asked a couple of friends to talk with their husbands about the appeal of eating dinner in someone else’s kitchen: Here is what they had to say:

“My husband's response was ‘a break in the routine or depending on the movie ... to romance’ (me). My thought was ‘to get out of doing the dishes!’” ~ Sherry

“My husband said, ’Because it's relaxing, we get to focus on each other and it's a special time.’ I asked if it had anything to do with being able to get meals that he doesn’t get at home. He said NO. It has to do with being with me. ‘We could go out to McDonald’s and have a good time, I don't care.’" ~ Angela

"My husband travels frequently, so he eats many meals in restaurants. Despite that, we still dine out without the kids a couple of times a month. He says the appeal for him is to escape from our crazy schedule and have some quiet time together. More often that not, we combine dinner out with a movie, so in his mind, it's a good date night event. He noted that since we also truly enjoy the art of food and savoring spectacular meals, that dining out and sharing meals and desserts (which are usually not eaten at our house outside of holidays or dinner parties) is more like an event than just a meal." ~ Teresa

A Night on the Town – Ambush-Style

My husband loves to go out to dinner. He promises me it has nothing to do with my cooking; he just likes the whole experience of dining on the town.

Recently, I went to his favorite Mexican restaurant and got a gift card with just enough on it to cover dinner for two. When he drove into the garage that evening, I ambushed him and let him know that dinner was on me tonight. With the car still running I jumped in and we headed out on our slightly-impromptu date night. That has probably been the most successful project for me so far - he still talks about how great it was to come home and see that it was all planned out.

Restaurant Food With all the Comforts of Home

If your husband happens to be one of those guys who really doesn’t want to go out to dinner, how about bringing the restaurant experience home? Several of our favorite chain restaurants (Chili’s, Outback Steak House, Applebee’s) have online menus to order from, as well drive-up to-go windows so that you can zip in and out in the amount of time it takes to ask, “You want fries with that?”

The Budget Night In

Is your man a huge fan of Red Lobster’s Parrot Bay Coconut Shrimp or Outback Steak House’s Aussie Fries, but has gone without because you’re trying to stick to a budget?

I have found a great place to find those favorite restaurant recipes that you can re-create at home.
Go to http://www.copycat.com to find all those recipes that make eating out such a treat. With a little patience (and a lot less money) you’ll be able to have your man’s favorites waiting for him as he walks through the front door. (And no credit card aftertaste to regret your choice at the end of the month.)

Still want to go out on a budget? Go to www.the husbandproject.org and check out “20 Dates for Less Than $20” under freebies. You will find some great, low cost dates.

Getting Creative

If you don’t know whether your husband will be in the kind of mood that an ambush dinner requires, present him with the gift card to be used that night, or on the night of his choice.

Steaks on the BBQ when he gets home may be just the thing your man would love. See if you can duplicate the steak rub used at your favorite restaurant.

Project Reports

“It’s easy, I just have Chinese ready for him! He’ll love it!” - Stephanie

“We don’t seem to be able to squeeze in the ambush meal these days, so on a Thursday at noon, right before he was getting ready to go out of town, I made his favorite lunch and lit candles and placed an orchid on the table. He looked at the table, smiled with a twinkle in his eye and said: What is this for? He was totally surprised and very pleased!” - Elaine

What about you? Log on and tell us about your dinner date.

The Husband Project Day 9: On My Mind

Project #9
On My Mind
Turning Your Thoughts Toward Him

Your Project:
Set up reminders during your day to think and pray for your husband. Let him know sometime during the day that he has been on your mind.

Thinking of Him, on Purpose

What can you put in place to remind you to think about your husband throughout the day? Be creative. Maybe it’s a picture of him on your dashboard, or spraying his cologne on a scarf and keeping it in your purse. Whatever it is that reminds you of him, keep it around so you can call him later that day and say, “You’ve been on my mind all day.” Trust me, it will make his day.

Calling to Share the Love – Not the Load

"You had me at 'hello.'" - Renée Zellweger as Dorothy Boyd in Jerry Maguire

“How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.” - Annie from the movie by the same name

Once you’ve prayed for your man, it may be time to let him know he’s been on your mind.

I say may, because it depends on the reason for your call. If your call is to let your husband know that you love him and that you have been thinking about him throughout the day – pick up that phone.

However, if you’re not totally intent on blessing him – think (and pray) before making that call. If you feel the need to vent, call your best friend or your mom – then call your man to let him know how great he is. I’m not saying hide things from your husband, but if you’re having a lousy day and your husband is not in a position to help, why share?

All I‘m saying is that, on most days, our goal should be to infuse our man’s day with love and light – not to burden him with our load. Obviously, if something big is going on in your life, and you need the love and support of your guy, there’s no reason to hide things from him. You know your husband and what a phone call during the day means to him.

How would your husband react if, instead of calling him to vent, or even rant, about how the kids have finger painted the cat, again, you called, not wanting anything but to tell him that you’ve missed him today.

A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones (Proverbs 17:22).

Not Calling – Sometimes the Best Gift You Can Give

“Whom we love best, to them we can say the least.” - John Ray

If you’re one of those women who calls twelve times a day to let your husband know you ran out of low-fat mayo – perhaps the best gift you could give him would be not to call at all.

Part of the fun and excitement of dating is that there’s a sense of wonder, a tingly and eager anticipation. He thinks, “What is she doing right now? Is she thinking about me?” However, when we get married, there tends to be an eventual lack of intriguing surprises in a marriage. We know everything about each other; he knows what you look like in the morning pre-tooth brushing. He knows you at your best and at your worst. He knows all those little things that no one else knows. And that’s the problem.

Give him a chance to miss you. Leave a little mystery in the relationship. If you wonder why he doesn’t ask you about your day when you get home, perhaps it’s because you’ve been sharing every detail, moment by moment, throughout the day.

Some good boundaries for phone calls:

He doesn’t need to know what you had for lunch, unless he asks.

He doesn’t need a detailed rundown of every awful thing your kids have done. (Does he tell you every time one of his coworkers is being a pain in the rear?)

He doesn’t need to know that you forgot something at the store.

I know these sound crazy in the cold light of day, but these are actual conversations I’ve overheard, and they’re the main reasons that the wives called their husbands.

Make sure that you’re attuned to your husband’s natural rhythms. My guy is happy with a phone call during the day (in fact, he usually calls me at least once a day) but on his busiest days, I know it’s better to just send an e-mail letting him know that I‘m praying for him and thinking of him.

A truly wise person uses few words; a person with understanding is even-tempered (Proverbs 17:27).

Getting Creative

Set an alarm on your cell phone for every couple of hours today. Let this be a reminder to stop and pray for your husband throughout the day.

Do you have a picture of your husband on your cell phone? Make sure you do so that when he calls, his cute face will show up. (Ask a techie teenager to show you how to program this on your cell.)

Project Reports

“The best way for my husband to know I’ve been thinking about him during the day is to have his iced tea brewed and ready when he comes home. Another phone call interrupting his day does not communicate love for him. I just have to leave a sticky note reminder for myself to remember to do it.” - Karymn

“I always check in with my husband because he leaves for work at 4 am. So I usually call him and say good afternoon around 7am. Then I go into talk about questions for the day etc. Well today I called him and sang to him over the phone our song. He laughed and thought it was really cute. He said thanks for the laugh.” - Strawberry

“I decided to send e-cards to let him know I’m thinking of him. I signed up for a 30 day trial to Yahoo Greetings. I found a couple of laugh-out-loud funny ones that appealed to me. I plan on sending him a different e-card each day for the next week, starting today. If he likes it, I will keep the subscription. He’s worth the $13.99 annual fee!” - sugga_lamb

“On the way home from the repair shop (where my husband followed me so I could pick-up my car), I took a detour into a Starbucks coffee shop. He loves white chocolate mochas and I was sure he hadn’t had one in a while. While I was waiting for the coffees I called him and said ‘I am no longer in front of you, I stopped in a Starbucks to get us coffees,’ (I normally do not do that since I drink one cup of coffee in the morning but he drinks coffee all day). He said ‘Really? Can you get me a white chocolate mocha ? I haven’t had one in awhile and have been thinking of getting one,’ I told him I already did and I will be home very soon with it.” - Linda

Leave us a comment and let us know how you encouraged your man today.

The Husband Project Day 8: Get Cooking!

Project #8
Move Over Rachel Ray
Cook Something for Your Husband

Your Project:
Make your husband something special in the kitchen (reservations don’t count).

“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.” - J. R. R. Tolkien

It’s an unfair fact of life – men like a woman who can cook.

Most of us didn’t grow up with a mom who passed down an exceptional culinary legacy. Many of our mothers were out there bringing home the bacon and frying it up in a pan (or nuking it in the microwave before she had to get a bunch of kidlets off to soccer practice).

My mom worked outside the home, and is a great cook. But, like her sewing skills, natural cooking abilities skipped a generation.

In my first tiny apartment living alone, I survived for a year on takeout food and ham sandwiches. I was deathly afraid of cooking anything as complicated as chicken, fearing that I would certainly poison any partakers with a lethal case of salmonella.

When I got married, however, I quickly realized that perhaps my groom would not be quite so satisfied with a steady diet of take-out sushi, yogurt smoothies, and Diet Coke. It was time for me to spend some quality time with my soon-to-be new best friend, Betty Crocker.

I decided to dedicate myself to the task at hand and learn to cook. Diving into the culinary deep end, I tackled teriyaki chicken. While the first results were a bit dry, they were not lethal. This gave me a great deal of confidence to try and jump a few more epicurean hurdles.

If you’re not a cook, but you know that your husband would like for you to be, go to www.thehusbandproject.org for some fail-safe recipes that I know you can do, and that your husband will love. How can I be sure? Both our teenage boys cook and eat the following recipes. If they can cook them, you can cook them. If they will eat them, your husband will eat them.

Share one of your husband’s favorite foods with us in the comments. Inspire the rest of us by sharing your man’s ooey-gooey favorite.

The Husband Project Day 7: Take Notice!

Project #7
Gotcha!
Notice the Great Things He Does

Your Project:
Tell your husband something about him that you think is simply great.

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen (Ephesians 4:29).

What Men Really Need

One of the big things I’ve learned in doing "The Husband Project" is that for us as wives, giving words of encouragement is one of the hardest Projects we have. Sometimes we get cranky about our husbands not expressing their feelings. However, the backlash I get from Projects that involve encouraging our husbands is that they’re often the most awkward and difficult for us to do.

Our husbands are desperate to know that they’re making a difference in the world – even if it’s only their family’s world. They need to know that their work, their interactions, their leadership, and their love are making a difference to the people around them – and you are their number one resource for getting that feedback.

This is not natural for most of us. It’s hard and uncomfortable to bolster our husbands with words – especially when we might feel, in our heart of hearts, that they don’t deserve them.

But, here’s the thing. When you begin telling your husband how great he is, it raises his bar, internally. Men, in every area of their lives, want to live up to the standard that has been set for them. He starts to see himself in a different light – not as the guy who is constantly missing the mark, but the one who surprises himself, and the people around him, with how capable he is.

Getting Creative

Keep a 3×5 card in your pocket today. Every time some great quality about your guy comes to mind, make a note of it.

If you’re having a little trouble coming up with items for your list, ask around. Ask your friends, your mom, your kids – anyone who is a fan of your man can point out all the good stuff.

Project Reports

“This was a Challenge to me today. I was not in the best of moods and feeling very irritable. Because of this project, I tried to put those feelings aside and focus on the things he does do. When he got himself a snack in the afternoon, I said that looks good I think I will have some too. Since the dog was lying with her head in my lap, he said he would get it for me. He does things like that all the time and I do not acknowledge that he does these little things. Therefore, when he came back into the room I not only thanked him but I went a step further and said “Thank-you so much for that, you are always doing such sweet nice things for me.” His response was precious; he started to smile but tried to restrain it and say, “You’re welcome.” He said other words but I can not remember them. Basically, he was down playing what he did, but was secretly thrilled for the praise. I need to work on praising him more for the things he does do, and thank-you Kathi for this project in helping us see ourselves more clearly. It also made me not run off with my irritations and instead focus on him.” - Linda

“I sent him an e-mail to let him know just how much I appreciate his hard work at providing the money. He works hard so I can stay home with the kids.” - Strawberry

In the comments, tell us how you encouraged your man today!

The Husband Project Day 6: Special Treat, Special Place

Project #6
Location, Location, Location
A Special Treat in a Special Place

Your Project:
Make it food and make the location fun. Really, that’s all it is.

“It seems to me that our three basic needs, for food and security and love, as so mixed and mingled and entwined that we cannot straightly think of one without the others… there is a communion of more than our bodies when bread is broken and wine drunk.” - M.F.K. Fisher, 'The Art of Eating'

It’s food again, but this time it’s all about setting.

In our culture, food is innately tied to celebration. If someone gets a promotion, has a birthday, or even scores an A on a test, the first words out of our mouths are often, “We should celebrate! Where do you want to go to eat?” I’m not saying it’s the best plan (especially, if like me, and half the other citizens of the United States, you or your husband struggles with weight issues) but it is a reality.

Many of my favorite memories with Roger are tied to food. When he proposed, he popped the question after grilling stuffed portabella over an open flame. On one of our first dates, he took me to an amazing Mexican restaurant in the middle of winter and we had tappas sitting next to a roaring fire. This past Christmas Eve, we had a carpet picnic eating pizza fondue and tangerines in the middle of our living room with our kids. While the food was important, the location is what made the experience memorable.

So, instead of focusing solely on the food this time, think about making a small event out of it. No need to get super fancy here. If he simply enjoys popcorn in front of the TV, that’s OK. Some other ideas?

If he enjoys being outside, how about dinner in the back yard? I have a friend who doesn’t have patio furniture, so she actually drags her wooden breakfast table and chairs outside. It’s not about resources, it is about creativity.

One thing our family has done on several occasions, especially when the kids were little, was to do the carpet picnic. Spread out some quilts, watch a movie and enjoy the great indoors. (This would be a great night not to serve soup.)

Pack one of his favorite snacks for a long trip.

For a more grownup encounter, how about a shower or bath with chocolates…

Project Reports

“I am going to shock the socks off my husband and get up when he does (4:30 in the morning), make him coffee and bring him a cup while he is in the shower. He will definitely know something is Up!” - SH

“Yummy yum! I made hubby’s favorite Cheesy Chicken recipe. His favorite place for food is at the table with our family so we kept the location traditional (have to go with what works for your hubby’s personality/preferences). I might try for a picnic when the weather allows.” - Karmyn

What little treat did you do for your man?

As the author of 'The Husband Project' Kathi Lipp speaks to groups across the country on how to put your marriage on Project Status.

The Husband Project Day 5: What Not to Wear

Project #5
What Not to Wear
Pitching the Pajama Pants

Your Project:
Get rid of one item of clothing you know your husband is not in love with. If it’s a favorite that you’ll have a hard time parting with, go ahead and purchase a replacement you know your guy will like.

Get rid of one piece of “comfortable” clothing. You know the one - it could be the pair of sweats, some comfy slippers, or a college sweatshirt. Your husband may not even notice that you’ve done away with it. The point is you’re taking another step towards thinking about him when getting dressed, instead of going to those sad, sad, jammie bottoms once again.

Just get rid of it. That’s all. You know what “it” is. For me, it was my pair of brown, cropped sweatpants that I thought were perfectly acceptable — but I knew that Roger secretly hated. I replaced them with a pair of cute brown sweatpants with a matching hoodie sweat shirt for when I am working from home or running the kids to all their activities. This outfit is cute and comfortable.

A List of Ten Clothing Items that Should Never be Worn Around Your Husband
Unless your husband has specifically said, “You look so adorable,” while wearing this particular item, it needs to go. Don’t make me come over and “What Not to Wear” you.

1. Team Jerseys (Unless they‘re your husband’s team and you are wearing the jersey as a sexy night shirt)
2. Overalls (unless you both work on a farm)
3. Running shoes for anything other than running
4. Mom jeans (super high wasted, tapered and pleated, oh my...)
5. Any sweater with a Christmas tree or a pumpkin on it (unless you’re a kindergarten teacher. Even then, change into something flattering right after work. There is nothing sexy about wearing ornaments.)
6. Long floral dresses that tie in the back. They make your figure look dumpy and make you look like you’re wearing a table cloth.
7. Acid-washed anything. Enough said.
8. Underwear that has any form of safety pin attached to it.
9. Nursing bras. Especially if your child is now six.
10. Anything that an ex-boyfriend has ever given you.

Getting Creative

What do your slippers look like? If they’re the pair you had in college, time to walk them out the door.

For one of my friends, it was a hair scrunchie that was seeing a little too much time outside of the house. (There was a bonus here because a number of her friends were about to have a scrunchie intervention. This project kept her out of a scrunchie 12-Step Program.)

That sumptuous terrycloth bathrobe you got at the spa several years back by now has lost its “wrap me in luxury” feel and probably qualifies for pet bedding material. Time to find another robe; and the only strings hanging off will be the belt ties.

Project Reports – What Other Wives Have Done

“I threw out an old t-shirt I loved to wear to bed - an old favorite with Troy Aikman on it. Aaahh. Anyhow, I took some comments my husband had said to me to heart and now go to bed with (gasp!) nothing on! I thought it would be an open invitation for sex all the time, but it hasn’t been. But, boy, is he a happy man! He gets to look all he wants and men are really visual beings. For his part, he got me an electric blanket which he turns on before I get into bed, which is so cozy. And, hey, I get to wear that beautiful robe I have. Everybody wins.” - Annie

“Great idea I’ve come across as I’ve gotten rid of all the comfy sweats…I now have nothing cute to wear, so I dropped a little note for my husband about this great Web site he should check out for Valentine's Day. It’s Pajamagram.com. It’s a win-win situation. He gets to pick out something that he would love to see me in and I get a gift! I think he loved the idea!” - MV

OK – let us know what your got rid of today – inspire the rest of us to get rid of some of those “comfy” clothes that should never see the light of day.

The Husband Project Day 4: Eliminate Stressors

Project #4
Stress-Be-Gone
Eliminate Something that Makes Him Crazy

Today’s focus is to remove one stressor from his life. Figure out what makes him feel a tiny sense of defeat each day and plan to remove it.

My husband and I live in Silicon Valley where the dreams are big, but the houses are small. Our home, measuring in at less than 1,300 square feet, with the two of us, plus throw in three teens living at home and a cat with a weight issue and you’ve got the making for some tight living quarters. Every square inch of our tiny town house serves at least a couple of purposes. The living room is also the kids’ computer room. Our dining area is homework central, and our master bedroom is also my office.

I know Roger would love nothing more than to come home and be able to lie down for a few minutes at the end of a hectic work day. Unfortunately, his side of the bed is the only flat surface I can use for the layout space for my next article, entitled "How to Organize Your Home from the Inside – Out."

One thing I can do to love Roger a little better is to make sure that the bed is clear of projects and folded underwear at the end of the day. One less obstacle between him and a few minutes rest will go a long way in giving him peace.

What in your husband’s day makes him stifle a sigh? Does he have to remove a driveway-full of bikes before he can park his car? Is he a neat freak who comes home to Mount Fold-Me on the couch every day?

Maybe it’s a carload of donations waiting to go to the Goodwill or a special screw he needs to pick-up in order to fix the door. Whatever it is, see if there’s a way to take the annoyance out of his life.

Getting Creative

Does the sound of Cartoon Network blaring when he gets home drive your guy nuts? Maybe some Mozart (or Credence Clearwater Revival) would be a better sound to greet him.

Does your he-man need to wade through piles of make-up and “product” just to brush his teeth? Time to declare some man territory in the bathroom. Put your stuff in baskets or on shelves so he has clear access to all his gear.

Project Reports – What Other Wives Have Done

“A little quirky but one of my husband’s annoyances is getting into the shower to find only a small, tiny little chip of a soap remnant left on the shelf. His biggest contention is that I take up the entire shower caddy with my 10 different “cucumber melon papaya mango coconut vanilla - there’s a produce section in our shower” bath gels so why do I need to use his bar of soap! I made sure a nice fresh bar of soap was readily available.” - Karmyn

“I went through all of the pens on my husband’s desk, pitching the ones that were out of ink, and replacing them with ones that could actually write.” - Tamara

Tell us what you did to get rid of that one thing makes your husband crazy (and not in a good way…)

As the author of 'The Husband Project' Kathi Lipp speaks to groups across the country on how to put your marriage on Project Status.

The Husband Project Day 3: Physical Touch

Project #3
A Little Hands-on Attention
Meeting Your Husband’s Physical (Touch) Needs

“When you touch a body, you touch the whole person, the intellect, the spirit, and the emotions.” - Jane Harrington

“He who feels it, knows it more.” - Bob Marley

Your Project:
Do something to help your husband enjoy physical touch. Find something that will help him relax. New pillows, massage lotions, a back rub…your choice. Make it something that both of you will enjoy.

What does your husband consider relaxing?

Here’s the project where you get to choose between Thai, Indian, and Moroccan, learn about choosing and blending oils, and get elbow-deep in the technique of kneading. Nope – it’s not watching the Food Chanel together – it’s all about massage.

Remember when you were dating how hard it was to practice self-control? Fortunately, Roger and I had excellent chaperones while we were engaged (four teenage kids). I remember thinking, “I cannot wait to be married so we can actually be alone and do all this hugging and kissing and…”

After a few years of marriage, however, I seem to have developed excellent self-control.

If I had to pick one love language for my husband, it would definitely be physical touch. He loves the feel of my hands on the back of his neck, wants to sit oh-so-close on the couch, and practically sits up and pants if I offer to scratch his back.

Tonight is the night to make sure that you man’s physical touch needs are met. Break out the massage lotion and make sure that your husband experiences some physical touch.

Getting Creative

I’m way more inspired to do this project when I’ve just purchased a new lotion or massage oil. Run to the mall and buy a jar of “inspiration.”

Do you feel stymied because you know your husband would love a massage, but you have no idea how to do it? You can pick up a book, or better yet, ask him to show you what would feel best. There’s nothing better than a little hands-on instruction.

Project Reports – What Other Women Have Done

“When we were dating I used to give my husband foot massages regularly. He kept saying 'When we get married this will all stop.' Not right after we were married but about a year down the road he was right – they became few and far between. Guess it’s time to give him a nice long foot massage! I think I will add that into my weekly schedule.” - Denise

“I love this. Not being a "touch" sort of person myself, I realize this is an area I’ve (selfishly?) neglected. I happen to have just a little something tucked away from the last time I got inspired. Going to dust the bottle off, take a shower, invite my playmate to bed...” - Angie

“My husband has a lot of problems with his sinuses. So as we were relaxing, I had him rest his head in my lap and rubbed his head for him.” - LJ

The Husband Project Day 2: Heart vs. Stomach

Project #2
Heart vs. Stomach
A Treat Just for Him

Your Project:
Get a food treat for your husband that he’s not required to share with you or any other family member.

My husband goes positively bonkers over a candy called Cherry Sours. As a leftover from his Florida childhood (from, what I can tell, was spent largely at Walt Disney World) he was first introduced to this candy and has great memories associated with them. The candy in question is a little red sugar ball – and my guy is desperately, inexplicably in love with mass quantities of them.

Which totally confounds me. They taste like the stuff your dental hygienist uses to rinse your mouth out after a particularly painful and thorough cleaning.

But, he loves ‘em, so I search for Cherry Sours whenever I can. They can be hard to locate, so when I do, I try to stock up, without Roger knowing.

Is there a treat that you personally find revolting that your husband absolutely loves? Get it for him, letting him know through this small act, “This is all for you, baby…” (and if you truly don't like the treat, he won't feel obligated to share.)

Even if you do love it, insist that it’s all for him. Don’t let him share with you. This is something special that does not require him to share with his neighbor. (It’s perfectly acceptable to get a matching treat for yourself.)

Getting Creative
Stumped for ideas? Here are some thoughts:

•Get his favorite pint of Ben & Jerry’s and hide it behind the frozen chicken. Even if you buy it on Tuesday, you’ll have it ready and waiting for his special night later in the week.

•Is there a certain candy that your husband loves from his childhood? Check out www.candywarehouse.com. They have all the nostalgic candy you could want (Black Jack Gum, anyone?) while also carrying any modern favorite you could be looking for.

Project Reports – What Other Women Have Done

“My lactose intolerant husband loves soy ice cream (bleck) and he has run out of his favorite kind that we can only get at a certain market in town. So…today, I will schlep to the market on the other side of town and pick up some Chocolate Peanut Butter Soy Dream Ice Cream. And he can eat ALL of it.” - Marci

“Easiest project so far! Pace Picante salsa HOT with tortilla chips plus a run to KFC for hot wings. I love that this project coincided with “Big Game” day - it made my day to love on him with his favorite football snacks!” - Karmyn

What food did you do for your husband food-wise? Leave a comment below and let us know.

Each day for the next two weeks, you will receive a new challenge that is designed to bless your man – and your marriage. But don’t worry, most of the challenges will take less than 5 minutes or cost less than $5. It is just a small investment that will make your husband feel loved and you feel great for putting your man at the top of your to-do list!

A couple of helpful hints to make the most of your mini-challenge:

Do the mini-challenge with a friend. Whether it is your next door neighbor or your cyber-buddy across the country, you will need someone to hold you accountable to do the project even when you don’t feel like it.

Read your project early in the day so that you have all day to check your project off your list.

Adapt the project to your husband. Not every project is going to be a perfect fit for your man – do what you can to make the project fit for your man – and you.

Don’t tell your husband about the project. Normally, I would never tell you to keep a secret from your husband; that is just bad marriage management. But this is an opportunity to bless your man with no expectations for reciprocation.

Project #1
You da’ Man
Spreading Great Gossip About Your Guy

Your Project for the Day:

Say something nice about your husband to someone else. Make sure you tell him what you said, and to whom.

As cliché as it may sound, our husbands want to be our heroes. More than they want to know that we love them, they want to know that we respect them. They need to know that they’re never the butt of our jokes, that they’re the go-to-guy in every story we tell.

Make an opportunity today to brag on your husband to someone else. It doesn’t matter if it’s one of your friends or one of his; let that somebody know how blessed you are to be married to your guy.

Some key phrases you may want to put on index cards to help you remember:

“I feel so lucky to have a man who knows how to do his own laundry.”

“You know when I knew that my husband really loved me? When he could remember my order at Starbucks.”

“I just love the way he is with our kids.”

“He makes the best lasagna on the planet.”

It may be something simple, but your man needs to know that you think he is doing things right on a regular basis. If he knows that your are telling other how great he is, I promise you he will be walking about with his chest puffed out just a bit!

Project Reports – What Other Women Have Done

“Okay, so I kinda cheated on this one. We were talking about this project at MOPS so I said to the ladies at my table, “Just so ya know, my husband is awesome!” So it was a little contrived, but I totally meant it. I’ll keep working at this “assignment” though. I want to make a habit of saying nice things about my husband in a more natural way.” - Christina

“I, too, try not to disparage my husband in front of other people (or to him for that matter) but I think I had gotten lazy about talking him up! He is a fabulous man and this week I made a point to let people know. My sweet hubby was a little embarrassed but he beamed when I told him about it! It feels great to focus on his strong points - it reminds me why I love him even more now than when I married him!” - Stacie

Let me know what you did today to brag on your man – leave a comment below.

Amy Grant' 'Mosaic' Paints a Beautiful Picture

Mosaic: Pieces of My Life So Far (paperback)
By Amy Grant
WaterBrook Press
ISBN: 978-0767929677, 222 pages

With her unmistakable voice and honest lyrics, Amy Grant has captured a unique place in American music. Now she bares her heart and soul in this collection of luminous reflections on everything from motherhood, marriage, and regrets to forgiveness, faith, and redemption.

I began Mosaic expecting it to be Amy Grant’s life story up to this point. But actually it’s more of a compilation of stories, song lyrics, and lessons from Grant’s life. My favorite part was a chapter called, “The Brazos River” in which she tells of being weighed down by the ramifications of certain decisions she had made in her life…. Grant writes:

I’m not saying I wanted to be anywhere else. I was grateful to be at this place in life surrounded by the ones I love—to lie down at the end of the day in peace beside my heart’s partner. It was just that I’d grown accustomed to the ache of grief caused by life, by loss, by doors closed that can never be reopened, the ripple effect of my choices. Consciously or unconsciously I had incorporated scars and shadows into my emotional movement the same way a war veteran accepts a permanent limp or disfigured limb—just glad to still be alive.

The chapter goes on to recount the impromptu water baptism of her and her husband Vince Gill. Touching and heartfelt.

When I heard that Amy Grant had published a book I was excited to read it. Grant’s ministry has impacted many people over the years, me included. I slowly made my way to Christ in 1983. Rather than it being one explosive moment of surrender, it was a year-long search for God—and the background music for that year was Amy Grant’s “Age to Age.” By the time I finally met Jesus, early in 1984, I knew every word to every song on that album. I had sung them in the car, alone at home on my knees, and near the end of my pilgrimage, lying face down on the carpet of my living room. Looking back on that time reminds me of my inexpressible thankfulness to God and to His servant Amy Grant. And I have a lovely 14-year-old daughter named “Amy” to help me remember that year-long journey.

Overall I liked the book very much, and was impressed with Grant’s ability to take the reader deep into her heart, without giving away private details of her life. The paperback version does have very small print, and some of the pictures are almost indistinguishable, but Mosaic is well worth the expense—especially for the consummate Amy Grant fan.

Dark Pursuit
Brandilyn Collins
Zondervan
ISBN: 978-0310276425, 283 pages

A new stand-alone “Seatbelt Suspense™” from bestselling author Brandilyn Collins. Kaitlan Sering’s estranged grandfather, novelist Darell Brooke, was the legendary King of Suspense—until an auto accident left him unable to concentrate. Now she’s begging him to protect her from a real serial killer. Can his muddled mind devise a plan to catch the murderer?

Dark Pursuit is a deliciously scary, completely engrossing read. The characters are multi-faceted and interesting. It’s fast paced, seriously creepy, and full of twists and turns. By the time I got to chapter 33 my heart was racing, and I was like a woman on a mission to finish the book.

I love the feeling of having a good book to read. Even when you’re busy doing other things, it’s always in the back of your mind that you have a great book waiting for you on the coffee table. Each time you pass by it calls to you. A good book begs to be read, and that’s how I felt about Dark Pursuit. By the final chapters I refused to put it down—going so far as to read it while I cooked dinner for the family; book in one hand, spatula in the other. After finishing it last night, I wandered through the house aimlessly. My life seemed so empty. What am I supposed to do now?

Give Books This Christmas

Still looking for presents for those hard-to-buy-for family members? These books will make great Christmas gifts for anyone on your list!

Multiple Blessings (Hardcover)
By Gosselin & Carson
Zondervan
ISBN: 978-0310289029, 187 pages

Three years after giving birth to twin daughters, Kate and Jon Gosselin became pregnant again—with sextuplets. Kate’s candid and emotionally-charged book chronicles the exhausting challenges she and Jon faced from the time the babies were conceived through the first two years of their lives, and the faith it took to get through each day.

Kate Gosselin tells the amazing story of how she and her husband, Jon, have survived the overwhelming odds of birthing not only twins but also sextuplets in three years, and how they continue to strive every day to honor Christ while he teaches them to thrive in spite of emotional, financial, social, and physical exhaustion.

Multiple Blessings is a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining read. It’s well written, detailed, and touching. I’m a fan of Jon & Kate Plus 8 (the reality TV show that records the Gosselin’s busy and unconventional life), so I was a bit worried that the book would basically be the “written version” of the TV show. Not at all. The book gives us details the TV show never has, and I was blessed and inspired by the extent of the Gosselin’s faith and trust in God. I’m happy to recommend this book, and to let folks know that Multiple Blessings would make a terrific Christmas gift. *Reviewed by Paula Friedrichsen, a writer and speaker who lives in Central California with her family. By Marty Norman
Thomas Nelson
ISBN: 978-0785228127, 186 pages

Advice from the heart of a rather hip and savvy Baby Boomer grandmother offers insight for grandmothering in the twenty-first century.

This handbook provides encouragement for grandmothers with the real issues they face today. Seven sections of essays challenge grandmothers to become healers, peacemakers, repairers of the breach in families, and to celebrate life transitions and aging. Topics, both humorous and serious, range from the importance of choosing a name, waiting at the hospital, and getting wrinkles to blended families, step-grandparenting, in-laws, boundaries, and dying. 'Generation G' will inspire grandmothers to realize their calling is great and their gift, of themselves, essential.

Beautifully written and even a little poetic at times, this book is arranged into essays about growing older, motherhood, and becoming a grandparent. It offers gentle advice, enjoyable and humorous personal stories, and lighthearted encouragement for those women who find themselves transitioning from motherhood to grandmother-hood. Generation G would make a unique and delightful Christmas gift—and the price is right too! *Reviewed by Paula Friedrichsen, a writer and speaker who lives in Central California with her family. By Dr. David Jeremiah
Thomas Nelson
ISBN: 978-0785228875, 257 pages

Is the current economic and political crisis actually prophesied in the Bible? If so, what are we to do about it? It is hard to piece together all this information in a way that gives a comprehensive picture of what the end times will look like. That's why so many theories abound. And that's why Dr. David Jeremiah has written 'What In the World Is Going On?', a unique book that cuts through the hundreds of books and numerous theories to identify the essential 10 most important bible prophecies. There is no other book like this. You'll find it the ultimate study tool for understanding the future. You'll have a greater sense of comfort that, even in these crazy times, God is indeed in control. If bible prophecy as always been a mystery to you, Dr. Jeremiah's book will help you solve the mystery.

I’ll admit that I thought twice about putting What in the World is Going On? on my suggested list of books that would make great Christmas gifts. I mean, a book about Islamic terrorism, the anti Christ, and Armageddon doesn’t seem all that Christmassy, right? But then I got to thinking about how topsy-turvy and upsetting our current economy, culture, and world at large is—and it made perfect sense to suggest this book as a Christmas gift. I found it riveting, easily digestible, and eye-opening. Whether you’re buying for a serious Bible student, pastor, or just your average Christian, Dr. Jeremiah’s What in the World is Going On? offers readers knowledge, insight, and best of all hope! *Reviewed by Paula Friedrichsen, a writer and speaker who lives in Central California with her family.
The Great Candy Cane Caper is the first book in The Reindeer Chronicles series, written by author Joe C. Watson. The novel centers around two young reindeer, PJ and Zipper, who are learning to fly so they can one day pull Santa’s sleigh like their elders.

The two deer enjoy their carefree life in the village until they are approached one day by a stranger, Baddey Twoshoes, who entices them with a promise to make them famous. What the two reindeer do not know is that Twoshoes has developed an evil plot to ruin Christmas, and he plans to use them to help him pull it off. From there, the countdown is on to see if the reindeer will realize their mistake in time to save Christmas. Along the way, the two young deer learn valuable lessons about honesty and responsibility.

480 pages

Is there anything meaningful under the Christmas tree? In the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season, the distractions of holiday preparations can easily eclipse the truth at the heart of the celebration: Emmanuel, God with us. This Christmas, parents can bring the true meaning of Christmas into focus by placing a special gift under the tree—a colorfully illustrated Bible from a series that has reached an estimated 240 million people in 160 countries.

Envoy House Publishers is introducing a brand new illustrated version of the New Testament just in time for Christmas gift-giving. “Many kids think the Bible has small text and no pictures, and if there are pictures, they’re probably boring. Our version brings kids the New Testament and selected Old Testament passages filled with illustrations that make it easier to read,” says Envoy House Publishers President David Hunt. “The presentation is simple, effective, and captivating.”

This new version of the New Testament is the latest product in The Most Important Story Ever Told (MIS) series, which originated with the creation of a 32-page presentation of God’s plan of salvation. Each individual book of the Bible includes an introduction to the book and writer, background facts, and interesting details to look for in the following pages. It also includes a section that challenges memorization of key scriptures, a map where kids can discover where Jesus did different things, and a dictionary that explains words essential to understanding our faith. This is a fun and easy way to come to know God and start reading the Bible.

Because the MIS New Testament, along with all other MIS children’s products, is always wholesale priced, it is only available directly from Envoy House Publishers. To place an order, and to view a complete list of products, visit http://www.mostimportantstory.net/mis-product-details.php?id=135.

The Girls ‘n Grace are back! In the short time since Texas mom Pam Davis first envisioned the Girls ’n Grace product line, her passion for redeeming “playtime” has begun to spread like a wildfire. The two latest books in the series, Sydney Claire: A Girl ’n Grace in the 1960’s and Mesi’s Season of Change: A Friendship Story, have been released just in time for Christmas.

“For Christians, the Christmas season is all about celebrating God’s greatest gift of grace. This grace is the central message that inspired the formation of the entire Girls ’n Grace product line—everything from the books to the companion dolls to the interactive website,” says Davis. “When girls can role-play the stories with their very own Sydney Clair or Mesi doll, the seeds of grace are planted in their tender hearts. Those squeals of delight on that every parent loves to hear on Christmas morning will signal the start of countless hours of grace-filled playtime. This is such a great opportunity for parents who want to give their daughters a truly meaningful gift.”

The book series follows the lives of several fictional young female characters as all facets of their lives, from their friendships to their goals, are affected by their walks with Jesus. Spanning contemporary history as well as the globe, the characters—and the readers along with them—will learn to depend on God’s grace, especially when their decisions to honor or trust Him are difficult ones.

Each doll from the Girls ’n Grace line comes with a mini Bible and a secret address code that acts as a key to a special online virtual world on the interactive website (www.girlsngrace.com). The site includes links for moms, mother/daughter Bible studies, games, a book club, and information about the line of dolls.

May I Walk You Home: Sharing Christ’s Love With the Dying
Melody Rossi
Bethany House
ISBN: 978-0764203558, 176 pages

Melody Rossi saw God work in the hearts of three close family members who died within a span of twenty-eight months. When she had nearly given up hope that they might believe, she was amazed to find their hearts softened to the gospel message. Melody learned that illness has a way of making a person hungry for the truth about spiritual matters. "May I Walk You Home" shows how to:
• Serve in ways that speak louder than words
• Respond to signs of spiritual openness
• Discuss matters of eternal importance
• Cope with the ups and downs of this difficult time

May I Walk You Home deftly tackles the serious subject of how to effectively evangelize a dying non-Christian loved one. The information is shared in an interesting and easy to read manner, and I actually read this book in one sitting. Rossi tells poignant personal stories and shares practical solutions to help those taking care of a terminally ill loved one. Although my intention was to read this book and pass it on, I found the information to be so valuable I’ve decided to hang onto it indefinitely.

May I Walk You Home takes an all-inclusive approach when providing information for caregivers of the terminally ill. It doesn’t just tell about the spiritual side of things. It doesn’t just tell about the practical side of things. It completely and fully addresses every aspect of caring for the dying and leading them to Christ. I recommend this book (and believe it would make a lovely gift) for those who volunteer in nursing homes or hospice—as well as those who are close to someone facing a terminal prognosis.

Prepare For Christmas

Are you ready for the holidays? If Christmas finds you frazzled each year, check out these two books to help you cut down on the stress that usually comes with buying gifts and entertaining. These two guides will help you get prepared for the holidays with ease.

Simplify Your Holidays (Hardcover)
By Marcia Ramsland
Thomas Nelson
ISBN: 978-1401604141, 192 pages

Organization and simplification expert Marcia Ramsland tackles the holidays with an eight-week plan designed to make Christmas a season of celebration, not stress. Most people begin to prepare for Christmas as soon as Thanksgiving is over, which can create great stress since Thanksgiving happens at a different time every year. However, Halloween is consistently eight weeks before Christmas, so beginning then ensures enough time to prepare and plan for both Christmas and Thanksgiving and to make this a season of joy for yourself and your family. This planner addresses all the details of the busy holiday season, including buying, wrapping, and sending presents, sending Christmas cards, home decorations, and cooking and baking.

Simplify your Holidays is a big, red, loose-leaf book filled with an impressive amount of helpful information and organizational tools to help women cross over from stressed to blessed this holiday season. It’s well-structured, and put together in such a way that it can be used year after year. I would especially recommend Simplify your Holidays to busy moms, or for those women who do quite a bit of entertaining over the holiday season.

A Scrapbook of Christmas Firsts (Hardcover)
A compilation book
Leafwood Publishers
ISBN: 978-0891125648, 160 pages

Is your December cluttered? Does Christmas leave you fretting instead of singing "Joy to the World"? In "A Scrapbook of Christmas Firsts," discover how to bring harmony to this busy month. Tips for family traditions, connecting generations, children, gift giving, how to grow myrrh and much more. Try the scrumptious "Cookie Canister" recipes. Read about families who experienced Christmas firsts. This is a book to help you uncomplicate Christmas, rediscover the real source of joy, and usher in the celebration of faith, family ,and a Savior.

When I first requested this book for review I never expected it to be so gorgeous! Made of high quality materials, it’s filled with stunning artwork, historical Christmas traditions, vintage poetry, recipes, heart-warming stories, and even practical holiday suggestions. Obviously this would make a charming and meaningful gift for anyone on your list—but I actually have a better idea… Give it as a gift to yourself. Then, when Christmas busyness threatens to steal your joy, find a quiet spot by the fire, pour yourself some hot mulled cider, and bask in the loveliness of this quaint and appealing book. It’s available at bookstores nationwide, as well as places like Amazon.com.
