Obama vs. the NRA: The Duel of the Lists

The Obama administration and the National Rifle Association have never been friends, but now they're on opposite ends of an all out war.

The day before the president announced the details of his plans to persue sweeping changes to America's gun laws, the NRA posted an ad calling the president an "elitist hypocrite." Here's the ad.

The NRA has a long list of members who are willing and ready to pitch in and fight the administration's efforts. However, Obama for America, the president's political arm, is motivating the activists on its list....the same activists who executed the grassroots plan that put the president back in the Oval Office.

In an email Thursday, Jim Messina, Obama's 2012 campaign manager, started the process of getting Obama supporters educated and involved in the gun control lobby.

"People like you spoke out and demanded action," Messina writes. "Your input, along with ideas from leaders and policymakers across the political spectrum, went into the president's plan."

Then, he included a hotlink for people to click, "learn more about the plan, and say you stand with President Obama in tackling this critical issue."

It's a battle of the two lists that both groups will use and stretch to their fullest. President Obama will also be employing social media. One monitoring group recently rated him the most influential user of social media in 2012.

Also, since the president is finished with elections, his Obama for America re-election campaign is about to transform into a non-profit, tax exempt group called "Organizing for Action." This new group will work to support the president's second term agenda, which includes gun control and immigration reform.
