I never thought that I would have my own special month honoring the accomplishments of people like me. I am part of the very small minority of redheaded left-handers who make up a mere 0.2% of the world's population, but that status never carried much weight when it came to things like filling out college applications or making a special presentation during multicultural day in high school.
But this March is the month for me, and millions of other Americans. Not only is this March Irish American Heritage Month, it's also Women's History Month.
The press release for the Irish American Heritage Month proclamation month reads a bit like a trailer to a movie: "Hungry but hopeful, poor but perseverant, Irish-Americans seized the opportunity to work hard, enjoy success, and pursue the American Dream."
I'm not entirely sure how many people are going to follow the presidential proclamation's request "to observe this month with appropriate ceremonies, programs, and activities," beyond the normal St. Patrick's Day festivities, but it's always nice to be recognized.
We're also supposed to have ceremonies, programs, and activities for Women's History Month, but something tells me that a Women's History Month activity might not get as much notice as a St. Patrick's Day party.
In any case, the many Americans who are neither female nor Irish still don't have to feel left out this March. It's Red Cross Month, too.
I wonder what April will bring.
