I am Beth Livingston. I began drinking at age 12. Only my friends knew. By senior year in college, I tried every high that was offered and never got in trouble. I still got good grades; a functioning addict. By my 30s, I went to AA, but kept using. However, I did seek a relationship with Christ.

That made the difference - I am free today! This blog is for people to discuss whatever addictions or habits are hurting them, to exchange struggles and victories and to pray for each other.

What's in YOUR Cooler?

Certainly, if you’ve been a drinker, your cooler had iced cold beer in it as you headed to the beach, or the lake, or the campground, on the boat, to the ball game. You name the summer activity, it was with you. And depending on the size of the gathering, there were either coolers with beer or kegs of beer. We were part of this crowd. Are you? Were you?

When we gave our lives over to Jesus Christ, the beer didn’t disappear. He met us and saved us just like we were, drunks and all the other stuff. He walked with us as we learned His truths about many things, but never demanded that we give something up right then or he’d leave us. In fact, He promised to never leave us or forsake us. Do you ever feel like God wants you to quit doing all the partying stuff to be able to come to him? Do you ever shy away from making a commitment to Christ because you think you’ll have to stop having fun? Brothers and sisters, Jesus knocks at our hearts door and asks to come in and be with us. He wants to teach us His ways, not condemn us for what we are like when we say, “I need you Jesus. I need a Savior. I need to be forgiven.”

Surely, the Bible speaks clearly about drunkards. God doesn’t want us to be drunks. He wants to help us be able to see our drunk selves the way He sees us: stumbling, often driving and endangering others, losing our moral compasses, saying and doing things we regret, setting in motion a legacy of drinking as a way of life for our children and grandchildren to come, not to mention the hangover, the nights we mix liquors and end up hugging a commode somewhere. When we take a good look at those aspects, is it any wonder that our loving Father would want us to stay away from those dangers?

He’s not shaking his finger at us, He’s longing for us to want to change. He’s longing for us to put something healthy in our coolers and learn how to have fun anyhow. If you’re ready to clear your cooler of alcohol and fill it up with some other cold beverage that has no chance to get you drunk, then please tell us what you plan to do. Tell us how it works out.

My cooler has ice cold Cokes, Coke Zero, Water, and Gatorade (some might not think that’s healthy, but it’s a start). I’m not worried any longer about being embarrassed about breaking some local ordinance with what’s in my cooler or not having drinks suitable for children. Let’s make a pact to pack our coolers expecting Jesus to have a cold one with us.

# RE: What's in YOUR Cooler?

It's Saturday morning and again after 30 years I am feeling the pain emotionally, physically and especially spiritually for falling into the old binge/purge senerio I know so well. Today, I am not sure whether I am looking to God for Forgiveness again, or repentence from me. I've been there, done that so many times, I feel as if I am a blasphemer. Don't get me wrong, I have been counseled on the causes of this relationship with food, and understand my weaknesses toward turning to it, but at times it is like a blackout, I don't listen to the inner voice to back off, and I am off again, and maybe deep inside I'm not really sure of the trigger, just the sorrowful consequences afterward. I know glutony too is a sin, and I have turned to food as an idol in my times of whatever, but again I choose that path and I truly feel crummy. Again I must turn to God for Mercy, Grace and Forgiveness, because without them, I am left in hell. Thank you for a place to talk, Bless you All.

I agree with Dixie - if not for God's mercy, grace and forgiveness, we'd be hopeless and destined to live forever in misery. Thank you Jesus for promising to never leave us or forsake us.

Please help Dixie to stay so close to you that she'll be able to be strong enough through your help to say No when the urge to turn to food for comfort comes again. Thank you for not giving up on her and me and the rest of us who get caught up in the cycle of saying no to our addiction, then choosing it to cope with life, then feeling yucky for choosing it and coming back to the starting line again. You have promised us all who continually seek you - freedom. You came to set the captives free. Help Dixie and all of us to be free forever. Thank you Jesus - what a strong and compassionate God we serve!

# RE: What's in YOUR Cooler?

Praise God! It's been 23 years this November that I was "set-free" from alcohol, tobacco, and a broken heart. It was on a mountain top in Southern West Virginia while I was trying to sleep in my car when I cried out "PLEASE HELP ME GOD!"

I was listening to a Country Western station when they played "Gloryland" by the Primative Quartet. During the next minutes I had no idea I was about to set Heaven into motion. Yes, Heaven! All it's Angles, and our Lord and Savior Jesus were about to go into action on my behalf.

Bound by alcohol most of my life there I was after loosing; My job, my home, my wife and beautiful daughter. Just days earlier I was holding my Mothers hand when she went to be with the Lord in the early morning hours. I WAS BROKEN!!!

I reached a low in my life that I couldn't run from when I cried out in desperation four words "PLEASE HELP ME GOD!"
Within two months Jesus set me free. "Whom the Son sets free is free indeed." You too can be "FOREVER FREE!" God Bless!

# RE: What's in YOUR Cooler?

I've battled alcohol for many years. I've prayed to quit and have many times over. I pray, read the Bible, daily and still never go more than a week without beer. I know it's a crutch and I am going through a lot in my life right now.
I still have my wife, even though she was just diagnosed with alzheimers at the early age of 59. I have been laid off work for over 6 months and insurance is up soon.
So what do I do? Pray and then reach for a beer.
I pray each day that it is my last beer that I will want

# RE: What's in YOUR Cooler?

Lord Jesus, so many of us struggle to let go of our "crutches" and we don't know why we can't stop adding them to our relationship with you. Thank you for your steady walk with us as you gently teach us how to set these things aside that give us a false sense of relief. Their help is for the moment and your help is for eternity. Please help Ron to be free from his desire for beer and thank You for keeping him strong in his prayer time along the path to freedom.
