All eyes are on sub-Saharan Africa, where voters eagerly wait for the results from Saturday’s Presidential elections in Zimbabwe.
Tensions are mounting in the poverty-stricken country, where nearly three decades of rule by Robert Mugabe has yielded an 80 percent unemployment rate, 100,000 percent inflation and an out of control AIDS epidemic which has cut the average life expectancy to 43 years old.
Though both sides are claiming victory, the delay in declaring a clear winner has raised fear of fraudulent tallying of the polls. Some Zimbabweans wonder if the elections were rigged by the Mugabe administration, while other rumors are swirling that President Mugabe will secretly flee his country and head to Malaysia.
CBN News caught up with Chris Hennemeyer, Regional Director of Africa from the International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES) to get his take on Zimbabwe’s elections. Watch the video for his response to the election crisis.
