Commander In Chief Misspeaks About Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

During his remarks to troops at Fort Drum today, the President was reminiscing about the times he has spent with the US Army's 10th Mountain Division, when he got something wrong.

"Throughout my service, first as a senator and then as a presidential candidate and then as a President, I’ve always run into you guys. And for some reason it’s always in some rough spots.

First time I saw 10th Mountain Division, you guys were in southern Iraq. When I went back to visit Afghanistan, you guys were the first ones there. I had the great honor of seeing some of you because a comrade of yours, Jared Monti, was the first person who I was able to award the Medal of Honor to who actually came back and wasn’t receiving it posthumously."

The problem is, Jared Monti was killed in action in Afghanistan, on June 21, 2006. He was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously, September 17, 2009. President Obama handed the framed medal to his parents, Paul and Janet Monti. He and the First Lady comforted them in the Oval Office following the ceremony.

Official White House Photo/Pete Souza

I contacted the White House to see what happened. I'm told the President didn't have prepared remarks.

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said, "At Fort Drum, the President misspoke when discussing the first Medal of Honor he presented posthumously to Jared Monti, who was a member of the 10th Mountain Division. The President paid tribute to Monti in his remarks to troops in Afghanistan in March 2010. Last year, the President presented the Medal of Honor to Salvatore Giunta, who was the first living recipient of the Medal who served in Afghanistan.”

The gaffe comes one day after the President announced his plan to bring troops home from Afghanistan at a faster pace. He deliberately spoke at Fort Drum because of the 10th Mountain Division's multiple deployments to Afghanistan.

B.S.! Obama does nothing without prepared remarks and a teleprompter. And/Or just further proof he has no respect and regard for soldiers!

Thank you for covering this story and it's good that Drudge linked your article. So sorry for Paul and Janet Monti - your brave son, Jared, will never be forgotten. May you find peace in your lives.

Sure, everyone makes mistakes, but when Obama is off of his teleprompter, he is gaffe-prone. Another example of the mainstream media double standards...can you imagine if President Bush had made this mistake?

I am deeply troubled. With the number of CMOH awarded in Iraq and Afghanistan the president should remember the names or at least have someone on his staff write them down for him. Perils exist when the man does not use a teleprompter.

Because the award citation includes the phrase "in the name of Congress", it is sometimes erroneously called the Congressional Medal of Honor; however, the official title is simply the 'Medal of Honor'. I wish Americans would learn this.

# RE: Commander In Chief Misspeaks About Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

This is not a surprise. Anyone who has ever served in war knows that too few leaders have empathy for those doing the country's dirty work. Those of us who served in Vietnam felt the cold shoulder of nearly the entire country. It was fashionable back then to spit on those sent to fight by the duly elected leaders (who spent most of their war-related energy getting sons of "important" constituents into newly formed Reserve and National Guard units). Barack Obama is one of those whose world view does not include a vision of what it means to be a soldier in the service of one's country. Bill Clinton had the same blind spot. Michael Dukakis spent zero time imagining what it must be like to be shot at. That crowd thinks service to country is picking the pockets of people who produce things to give the money to people who don't. "We support the troops" is horse_____ if the person saying it is also trying to figure out how to abandon the cause those troops are being asked to die for.

No one knows the mind of man but God and though I'm sorry for the hurtful things that have happened, I have had to learn to pray for those in authority over us, so I can see this nation once again united!! I think there are many in this nation that ache for the service men and their families for what they go through, but also so much gratefulness for the fact they are willing to go and serve. I hope seeing these mishaps that happen cause us to pray for those in our government to come to know the love and compassion of God, and to not judge so harshly - knowing that by the way we judge we shall be judged. Jesus took it all on himself for us, when we were yet sinners. I'm sorry for all that has happen - but we are still "all" accountable for our words and actions.

I don't fault the President for not supporting the military...after all, he did meet with the parents privately and console them, and did meet with the troops.

Where I DO fault the President is:
1. I disagree with almost every policy and decision he has made since being in office.
2. I stronlgy dislike his arrogance and elitist attitude, and lack of "leading America by example".
3. Given the tax dollars I pay for the President to build a competent structure around him in the White House, I am surprised that his team would make such a rookie mistake. These guys are supposed to be pros, and in their mind, "the smartest guys in the room, better abel to make decisions how to spend your money than you". The President's clear lack of leadership in not being prepared in BASIC organizational skills in building a team makes it clear he's over his head. He's unable to maste rthe basic skills of being a CEO, which further calls into question any skills he may have to lead the country.

By you approving them, you and CBN complicit in what they say. Well done, my good and faithful servant? Just a thought.
