Why Traditional Diets Don't Work

“Traditional dieting strategies don’t work for emotional eaters because the psychological aspects of weight management aren’t fully addressed by most plans. Most diet programs don’t deal with self-sabotage and the real reasons why we knock ourselves off track. To achieve lasting weight management success, emotional eaters need to go through the following four stages of change.

D - Discover: The first step is to discover our hidden emotional obstacles and understand the food-feelings connection that makes balanced eating so difficult. It’s essential to tune in to our inner selves before we can attempt to change our outer appearance. We need to identify the self-defeating thoughts and attitudes, that lead us to sabotage our success with such frustrating regularity. Discovery is crucial because it’s impossible to win the weight war until we know who the enemy really is.

I - Invent: Once we’ve discovered the emotional issues and self-defeating ways of thinking that have always stood in our way, we need to invent a new way of managing our lives and ourselves. It’s time to break free from old habits and standard modes of operating. This requires that we invent healthier, more nurturing ways of thinking to combat those self-defeating tendencies.

E - Extinguish: The next step is to extinguish the old, unhealthy ways of thinking, feeling and perceiving as we adopt our newly-invented life plan. Healing old wounds and building new skills will help us deal with life’s troubles head on and decrease our reliance on food.

T - Transform: Our final task is to transform our new insights, skills and healing into a positive lifestyle that emphasizes healthy food choices and regular exercise. After much hard work, one of my clients got to this stage and said, “I’m at the point now where exercising and eating right are emotionally uncomplicated.” What she meant was that she at last felt free of her old emotional shackles and could now make the commitment necessary for the long-term task of successful weight management.

The D.I.E.T. Plan is a sometimes tough — but necessary — process for those of us with emotional eating issues. Remember: Until you deal with the issues, you can’t tackle the fat."---author unknown

I don't know who wrote this but I LOVE it nonetheless! After having lost 130 pounds and struggling like most women to KEEP it off, I know the issues we face first hand.

The self-discovery aspect of the weight loss journey is perhaps the most important part. The workbook that is part of The Vice Busting Diet is filled with 26 vital weeks of it. It isn't enough to say you want to lose weight, you must get to the root of why you gained it in the first place and what it might be doing for you. What do I mean by that? In the 10 years that I have been trying to help obese and overweight women to get healthier, to give up their most unhealthy habits or "vices" I have found that for many women the excess weight serves as a shield from getting hurt--or atleast they think it is sparing them. When in reality, the excess weight harms health, hurts self-esteem and sometimes hinders personal growth.

It is time to reinvent yourself and your future! Extinquish poor health and excess pounds from your life and in doing so you will transform into the person you know you can be!

# RE: Why Traditional Diets Don't Work

What if you equate over-eating with being abused as a child? I have forgiven the abuser and abandoner (same person--no longer living). I have no problem with cutting down on food (though I still have my soothing foods) or watching t.v. but HATE exercise. Am I still punishing the abuser in my own way? I want to be healed but just can't quite get there.

vlaine, I do think that those of us who have suffered various forms of abuse often times continue to hurt ourselves via eating in excess or unhealthy foods, not exercising and not taking care of ourselves as we should.

I think that doing that only continues the cycle of abuse and in many ways lets the person that abused you still 'control' you in a way, so taking control over your health, your diet, and your choices is such an empowering, healing and freeing thing.

I encourage you to pray for healing, pray that you find the strength to really 'let go and let God'. That really is all we need.

but, with that said, do not just pray without action on your part. Start doing some exercise each day--even 5 minutes will help you create the habit in your life and help you get healthier

# RE: Why Traditional Diets Don't Work

I have to say that our childhood definately has to do with our eating disorders. I have analyzed my self to death. I know why I overeat but I can't seem to get control of it. This is the worst shape I've ever been in. I've been fighting a weight problem for over 30 years. But I just recently realized I had an eating disorder. I am a christian of 8 1/2 years now. I know God has saved me. I have asked for healing of this emotional baggage and strength to overcome, but to no avail to date. I have been on diet for 30 years off and on. I have lost down to my goal weight many, many times only to gain it back. Obviously not getting down to the real problem. My doctor is worried about my cholesterol levels and suggested I go to counseling. But I need christian counseling and I don't know where to get that. Anyway, thats my story.

three months ago i watched a video showing what is done to the cows, chickens and pigs in this country. they are abused beyond belief. not just in their being killed for consumption but their whole life they are abused. peta has undercover videos. i have not eaten any animal or animal product since i saw the torture of Gods creatures. i have lost weight now that i eat vegan. i didnt stop eating meat or meat products to lose weight but because i can not be a part of the cruelty. God created the animals for our pleasure not for us to eat. before the flood man did not eat meat.

I think God designed our bodies to eat a LOT better than the "modern" American diet, that's for sure!

I still eat meat but rarely and not much of it when I do, so I tend to agree with Vitsss, however, you don't have to vegetarian to lose weight--it is more a matter of seeking optimal health.

I would have a person gradually improve their diet, their weight and once you get a lot of the weight off you will almost naturally want to do more of the same good feeling healthful living, and getting off of meat, but still eating protein from other sources is a good way to do that!
