How to Get Started Losing Weight

Getting started!  That is the answer when asked "What is the hardest part about losing weight?".

When you want to lose weight, you think the only way to accomplish this is to "go on" a diet, and most often they require too many changes all at once. And that is why the hardest part is getting started. Therefore, you soon "fall off" that diet only to wait for the next diet to come along to "go on."  You find yourself in this continuous cycle of struggling to get started, failing, and waiting for another diet to try again.

There is a way to stop this frustrating cycle. And that is to simply to "stay started". What does that mean? It means that you only start on only one healthy change and stick to it until it's permanent. This approach is called Vice Busting. Vice Busting isn't a diet, but a way of gradually breaking unhealthy habits in favor of healthy ones - one at a time. You will make an easier transition from the lifestyle that currently supports your excess weight to one that enables weight loss, fitness, more energy, and better health so that you can live the life of your dreams. It all starts with one simple action.

Start now! To learn the Secrets of a Healthy Lifestyle (FREE) - go to www.ViceBusting.com.

And remember, whatever your problem is when it comes to losing weight, I'm here to help.  Just log in and post your question.

# RE: How to Get Started Losing Weight

I just acquired a new job as a corrections officer in a jail facility. I am a 46 yr old female. I began working our a couple of weeks ago, because I would like to build strength and be fitter than I am, I am not really over weight, I have just started gaining weight in the last couple of years and only wear a size 4 and small to med shirt. but I have noticed my stomach being larger and bulging, I would like to decrease it's size. I'm not sure If I am doing enough to increase my strength without causing injury to myself and would like advice on how to decrease my stomach size. Can you advise me on this? How do I know if I'm doing enough exercising. I have started going tothe gym 3 days a week for about an hour of weight work out, lifting approx 30 lbs 2-3 10 times reps.

I am 63 years old and had a total hysterectomy
2 years ago. Since that time, I have had a
much more difficult time with weight control;
particularly around my waist, stomach, and hips. Is that related to the surgery, my age,
or am I just looking for an excuse?

# RE: How to Get Started Losing Weight

I can only seem to lose weight if I exercise 3 hours a day. I have no energy. I had cancer about 10 years ago. I think I lost my metabolism then because I have since gained about 50 lbs. I really want to lose weight and feel better but I can't seem to get the weight to come off.

Do you approve of artificial sweetners such as Splenda? I haven't heard good things about it.
But alot of my food such as yogurt, fudge pops, or diet juice drinks have Splenda in it.
If this is not good, how do you feel about
Stevia?

Dezzie, you can't really "spot" lose when it comes to weight loss, but it sounds like your regime is good, I would have you add some core exercise--crunches, ball workout (there are some great DVD's available for abs!)

Jonghi, generally, we seek excuses to cover our weight gain, but in MOST cases, it really has more to do with our actions, choices and lifestyle than age or a condition. I always tell someone until you have been 100% healthful in all of your actions for MONTHS, don't say it won't work!! See what a few months of healthy living can do for you!

jpfore you can't exercise 4 hours a day, it's not realistic. read what I answered to jonghi above, and give me some more info on a typical day for you, food and activity. I am 100% sure we can get you losing some weight, regardless of what health conditions you have, maybe not as much as you would like, but certainly some!!

jefegarme, don't eat what you bake! make that a rule, if you have to cook/bake a lot of food, you are going to have to be very strict about NOT eating outside of meal times and NOT eating nibbles here and there, they add up! Are you getting any exercise?

# RE: How to Get Started Losing Weight

Oprah said "skinny cows are amazing" yesterday on her show, I totally disagree! All of these "lite" products and fake sugars give us a false sense of health and we think we are doing something healthful for our bodies, we aren't if we consume fake garbage! Think of what you eat in this way, if God didn't create it, it probably doesn't belong in your body!

a natural sweetner that is good is Stevia, it's an herb like plant that is sweet; like putting basil on food, but it's sweet. many companies offer it in various "sugar" like products.

Diet Coke and Pepsi? A BIG No-NO if you not only want to lose weight but to be optimally healthful and treat your body like a temple!

# RE: How to Get Started Losing Weight

I have tried every diet that I know about. I have never stuck to any of them more than 2-3 weeks. I don't seem to have any stick-to-aness. I don't like myself. I am 61 yrs old and I need to lose over a hundred pounds. My husband is ill and I am a 24/7 caregiver. I am bored and turn to food all the time. I think "what difference does it make anyway. No one cares" I feel desparate about my health. My knees are giving out and I am tired all the time. I know I need a change, but where do I find the courage to try again and stick to it?
Thanks

# RE: How to Get Started Losing Weight

I'm 43 and would like to GAIN weight!
Haven't gained a pound since high school.
Healthy anabolic muscle gain, perhaps 15 or 20 lbs.
I'm happily married, father of 4, busy with a wonderful family life & running my own business, so time is at a premium and resources are diverted to our young children.

Please advise,
Lee

# RE: How to Get Started Losing Weight

wnwood, you find the courage by taking ONE step! I would encourage you to make your goal for the next two weeks or even 3-4 to drink up to 1/2 your body weight in fluid ounces of water a day, for example, if you weigh 300 you need to drink 150 ounces a day. NOT in one sitting but rather in small sips throughout your day. It will do a few things; curb your appetite, make you feel more energized and replace whatever you are drinking which is likely high in calories and sugar with somethihng calorie free and much better for you!

ONE step at a time can and will change your life!

How do you feel about counting carbs? And what is a healthy amount to eat?
Left by gschenck on Feb 11, 2008 3:21 PM

# RE: How to Get Started Losing Weight

gschenck, I don't like counting anything, I like staying within a portion size (about the size of your fist) of any food serving on your plate. I would recommend very strongly that ANY time, EVERY time you eat pasta, bread or potatoes that you also take Phase 2 with it. It's an all natural kidney bean extract that helps your body digest about 65% of the consumed carbs as FIBER rather than sugar. THAT is a huge help, but not if you are eating the entire breadbasket, but rather one or max. two rolls! you can learn about it at www.Phase2info.com

# RE: How to Get Started Losing Weight

My husband and I are trying to lose some weight,he is a type 2 diabetic and he seems to think it is ok to eat three meals a day.I told him it would be better to eat five small meals a day so his insulin wont drop making him feel more hungry,he thinks he will have more cals. if he ate fewer smaller meals then if he just ate the big ones. He goes hours between meals which I know makes him feel bad. What do you think and or suggest we can do. I do not like counting cals. I think you can get to far off in to that ~ ~ ~ HELP.

peacelovejoyandGod (what a great name and prescription for a healthful life!--that's all one needs!)

I would have to side with you on this one! 5 meals are best, or for him, 3 meals and 2 snacks. There are some good protein bars available that would work, or one of Pat's smoothie shakes.....or fruits/veggies.....or a lite meal.....

I am Trying to Lose Weight as we Speak and Nothing is Working. What can I do and SEE RESULTS?

# RE: How to Get Started Losing Weight

ElectofGod08, the key is consistency! I know you want to SEE results and see them FAST, but if you are losing weight the "right" way of slow and steady, 2 lbs a week...that is an average! there are weeks NONE moves off and weeks more does, but it is consistency over many weeks and months that takes pounds off and lets you see results!

want fast results? do medifast for a month!
