Oprah & Spirituality: It's No "Secret"

Oprah is pushing her New Age philosophy on the public, and the Church and other media is pushing back.

Watch the video: Oprah Denies Christ

Recently, Oprah began a ten-week long online course on the best-selling book, “A New Earth,” by New Age guru, Eckhart Tolle. Thanks in large measure to Oprah's publicity campaign, “A New Earth” has already sold some 3.5 million copies worldwide.

According to Oprah, 500,000 people from across the world signed on to the first segment of the online course, to spend an hour and a half listening to Ekhart and Oprah talking about chapter 1 of the book. There is also an in-depth interview with Tolle in Oprah's magazine this month.

Craig Parshall writes of the "Oprah-zation" of religion in the National Religious Broadcaster's "Inside NRB" e-newsletter:

The content of Tolle’s religious philosophy is, by his own admission, a combination of Buddhist and Islamic thought, with some measure of what he calls 'Christianity' (in actuality a few New Testament verses misapplied and then sprinkled into the mix).

What is dangerous about all this is, at a minimum, three-fold: it presents a deceptive and false spirituality; it is massively communicated by one of America’s most recognizable media divas using the interconnected vortex of radio, print, and the Internet; and lastly, big media, oft-too quick to man-handle conservative Christianity, seems to have nothing but plaudits for this new 'Oprah-zation' of religion."

In an article titled, "Is Oprah Starting Her Own Cult?" Roger Friedman, writing for Fox News, suggests that "Oprah Winfrey may have gone too far in exploiting and distributing the teachings of this questionable New Age writer."

On the first 90-minute Webcast with Tolle, Oprah extolled the author’s virtues, calling his best-selling "New Earth" book "one of the most important books of our time," the seminars one of "the most exciting things I’ve ever done."

But is Eckhart Tolle an appropriate spiritual leader? … He says in interviews that he had a personal epiphany in 1977 at age 29 after a life of suffering from suicidal depression. For the next 15 years, no one knows much about what happened to him, and he’s not saying. He says he spent time wandering and sitting in London’s parks, with "no relationships, no job, no home, no socially defined identity," but a sense of "intense joy." … His books, "The Power of Now" and "A New Earth," are the same gobbledygook as most New Age stuff. They’re all about self-empowering and how to find out who we are. "Awakening" is Tolle’s key word.

In a recent Blog, The 700 Club's Scott Ross writes this concerning Oprah's spirituality:

Another follow up to the Oprah story with author Eckhart Tolle, and his “theology,” including Oprah’s own belief in regard to Jesus Christ; obviously not biblically sound or orthodox.

Oprah, in reply to a caller, stated that one must simply realize that Christianity is but one of many ways to achieve the “higher consciousness,” and that the belief that one must follow a set of doctrines is a consequence of “egoiic consciousness.” While Christianity is a valid way to achieve high states of spirituality, it must not be considered a unique way, or a “correct way.”

“Jesus,” said Oprah, “came to show us Christ-consciousness … Jesus came to show us the way of the heart…Jesus came to say, "Look, I’m going to live in the body, in the human body, and I’m going to show you how it’s done." These are some principles and some laws that you can use to live by to know that way.”

She concluded, “I don’t believe that Jesus came to start Christianity.”

Oprah also indicated that there are many names that one might give to that which she calls “God," including “energy,” “consciousness,” and “life.”

There's no real "secret" here -- Oprah has rejected the biblical Christianity of her youth and has gone "after other gods."

They have returned to the sins of their forefathers. They have refused to listen to me and are worshiping other gods. (Jer. 11:10, NLT)

Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. (John 14:6, NLT)

Another celebrity with a lot of money & fame who has been blinded by the god of this world and gone off the deep end. What would her grandmother think?

Oprah's guru seems to have the looks and brains of one of the Keebler cookie elves, or should I say he seems like a kookie elf? A genuine Christian woman named Carrington Steele has written a great book on the deception, entitled "Don't Drink the Kookaid."

Its quiet unfortunate what money can do to our lives.the kind of destruction it brings. And its queit unfortunate that Oprah has decided to go aganist all what her grandmother taught her about christianity and God who has blessed her because of the prayers of her grandmother. We forgive her for her path of life and pray that God will deliver her.God will bring a strong conviction in her heart and soul and realize who he is and what he has done for her.

Christians must let the public know that there is a spirituality that is "authentic". It is, "him Jesus Christ Crucified (1 Cor 2:2)." Paul taught that we are "in" him when we died to sin through our Baptism (Rom. 6), so, now we "enter into" the mystery of His Sacrifice and then we can participate fully in the lives of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. He came to earth to save us so we can "enter into" eternal life with Him. Not just in Heaven but on earth, too, through prayer and sacrfice which means uniting our own sufferings to His on the Cross. To preach or witness to any other joy as Oprah does and Scientology, Buddhism, etc., is to have a spiritual life that is not authentic but is false. I could go on. We have to pray for her.

What she has delved into is very misleading and one who does not have discernment can be easily enticed to believe such nonsense. However, our Lord and Saviour is so loving, kind, and merciful. I remember one day talking to a lady(I believe she was muslim) who felt the prescense of God all over me. She asked how do you pray to God because I know He hears you. I said, the only way to the Father is through His Son, Jesus Christ of Nazareth. She looked at me with tears in her eyes because she could not confess it. I felt great compassion for her and prayed for her because she knew the Truth.

Very good article, but my question is why does CBN put on things from Rick Warren when he avocates some of the same New Age stuff.

Just try doing a search for Decieved on Purpose, or any another on Rick Warren.

Wake up before it is to late!

# RE: Oprah & Spirituality: It's No "Secret"

Ten years ago, I began to hear Oprah preaching her own gospel, and the more I listened, the more my spirit was troubled. Five years ago, I quit watching and was thought to be "narrow minded" by several. Since then, I have written numerous articles and blog posts, trying to wake up Christians, especially female Christians who think Oprah can do no wrong. In my opinion, Oprah is now one of the most dangerous people in America, and I pray God will stop her from proliferating heresy. It grieves me beyond words.

Oprah has done many good things for people (building new homes for Katrina victims, her school in S.Africa and other endeavors) but I am shocked and saddened by her latest leap into "The New Earth." I listened recently to her daily program with Tolle as a guest. I can honestly say I didn't know what they were talking about. It made no sense! Yes, we do need to pray for her because she is not only on a slippery slope herself but taking thousands with her.

Thank you so much on your wonderful article about Oprah. This is a very powerful woman that reaches out to millons of people each and every day. Satan uses her unbelief in our Lord to send out false witness to millons each day. Educating people on her new age way of thinking and what it can lead to is very important. People need to know the truth.

I pray for her that she sees what the truth really is.

Why are so many Christians certain she was saved to begin with?...a simple fallacy many in the West make based on the externals. Let us not forget one way Jesus qualified it..."My sheep know my voice and will not listen to a stranger..." The days are getting darker, the night's coming when no man can work...Christians need to wisen up and not be so gullible about Jesus' warnings and what we see in media.

# RE: Oprah & Spirituality: It's No "Secret"

This isn't new for Oprah, she had a show sometime last year about "The Secret" and her show topics have really gone to the dogs. I do not watch her anymore, even when it is a show that is informative. She's given power over to the homosexuality lifestyle and she is definitely deceiving people about Christ. So many people are going to be led astray or lead to believe in something that is false because of who she is, and Oprah will be accountable. She can be a good asset to the kingdom, but she has chosen to be a hinderance. I encourage everyone to stop watching her show. I know that here on earth she is a powerful being, meaning when she speaks people listen. But, God is greater and He will prevail. All we can do is pray for her and for those who hang on every word that she says. As true believers we know truth from false doctrine. That is why we must pray continuously for her and her audience. God Bless

I think it would be good for Oprah if thousands of christians would email her and to tell her we are praying for her. Ask her to return to the true God. The God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob. Also All christians should stop watching her show until she returns to the true gospel. Otherwise we are helping spread the false teaching she is putting forth.

This is why it is important how we spend our money. When we make entertainers wealthy we give them power that is almost sure to be misused. Even now I know there are Christians watching Oprah, hanging on to her every word and giving her the ratings which allow her to remain on the air. Where we spend our time and our money matters!

# RE: Oprah & Spirituality: It's No "Secret"

I want to address the comment about Rick Warren, and the one that this isn't new to Oprah. The devil has devised an alternate to everything that God has and does. There are many things that seem the same, and we label it demonic. Before salvation, I was very much into this meditation and new age mentality. Many in the church are deceived because they do not use the gift of discernment. Some justify their actions. But everything must be based on what does the Bible say. If someone is unsure .. read the instructions .. the Bible.
If you look at some of the segments on YouTube, it also shows Oprah saying she allows the spirits to enter into her body and give her shows a boost. So does Denzel Washington in one of his segments on YouTube stating that he takes on the character so he can act better. And he too is reported to be a Christian.
some of this is total lack of knowledge and that too is in the bible .. as destroying the people.
Read the Bible ... get the real news

The message of the cross is nonsense to those who are destroyed, but it is God power to us who are being saved. To Oprah and Eckhart Tolle and their followers with their secret, and the power of now:The real "power of now"is only from God.The power is the cross, and the "now" is the word that the Church emphasizes on it.The Holy past is present "now" with power.I refer to the book the coin of the temple isbn 1425905773 which shows in a real story the "power of now".I challenge Oprah if she dare to speak on TV about the secret and the power of now of the coin of the temple. There,we will discover who is false, and who is right.

Thank you CBN for posting my comment, I was surprised that some Christian webs were afraid of doing it. Cowards sould not speak about The Lord Jesus Christ. I will not say names, but it is a great shame. One of the web is for a lady and a wife of a pastor saying: Be careful, be moderate like you are speaking face to face or I will not post the comment. I said to that lady: If you are afraid from the comments which say the truth do not speak about Jesus Christ and I write my comment.I am not sure if she is going to post it. Another one have an interesting web about prophecy years and I post on his web, the second day I find that he puts something in his system (I am not an expert in computer) forbidden to have access on the comments. I am not an American or living in America but it is a great joy to find Christians who stand firm like you.God bless you all.

# RE: Oprah & Spirituality: It's No "Secret"

Gibran Khalil Gibran and now Eckhart Tolle and Oprah all these new age gurus are free to think what they want, but that is not the truth and opposite to christianity. Millions of people were attracted to Gibran who was a pioneer of new age,in his book Jesus son of man divested Jesus of His divine nature amd miraculous attributes presenting Him instead as a sage,a guru. That is why Gibran painting of the crucified without blood.I reiterate my request to Oprah if she dare,to speak on tv about the power of the cross and blood on that good friday in Jerusalem in 1994 in the book the coin of the temple by souheil bayoud,(published in 2006). What Oprah is saying about the Lord Jesus Christ is a deadly error, and it seems that new age teaching may be an introduction to the end times world religion of the antichrist.
